Yeah, the trailer FINALLY  dropped:

Okay, I am an old school sci-fi nerd...and I managed to re read the first book this summer....despite myself, lol. I'm gonna be honest with you guys....when the Maker came out of the sand I about lost it. I REALLLLLY hope we can see this on the big screen this December.

(Yes I am old enough to have seen the 1980s Dune...Yes I like it for what it is....to the point of wanting Sting and Toto to have a song on the new movie's soundtrack. Told you I was a nerd)

  • Cool 2

Not sure I'll see it in theaters but will see it on DVD at the very least.

The visuals on this thing will be awesome.

Edit:  I think the problem with Dune is going to be the book has enough content for more than 1 movie.  They are going to either break it up in to more than 1 movie (which I don't like), or leave a bunch of stuff out (which I also don't like).

I'm just nervous they will screw it up royally. However, I wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised.

I loved the Dune books, then I saw the original movie and was, like, wth is this crap!

I would really like to see it done right this time.

Dune the mini-series was pretty good.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0142032/

I've listened to several of the books on audio (CD).  I've seen the first movie.

I'm wondering if someone saw how well Tolkein's works did when put on the silver-screen and milked for millions of <insert-monetary-unit-here>.
Why not "Dune", eh?  :-)

I believe that the intention is to break it up into 2 movies, Holmes.

I'm old school too.  I also saw the David Lynch adaptation in the theatres back in the 80s.  It wasn't all that great though there were some good visuals.

Regarding the worm, when it came out of the sand, the damned thing looked ENORMOUS!  Cool.

Also, this movie's soundtrack is being done by Hans Zimmer, so that's a big 2 thumbs up right there.  And the cast looks excellent.

Did you catch the PF cover there in the last couple seconds?

Other than cutting out Glorfindal (like Gandalf...also returned after a balrog battle in the Silmarilion...worthy character to include...& Glorfindal was just an elf...not 1 of the lesser gods like Gandolf & Sauron)...to give Liv Tyler some extra screen time (OK...extra Liv Tyler screen time... we'll give Jackson a pass on that 1) in an unrealistic (per the story...let's not get into the IRL aspects of that comment) scenario of her every being out of Rivendell unescorted...my only real complaint (NOT forgivable under any circumstances) w/the trilogy was Sam leaving Frodo...bad Peter! Bad Bad BAD Peter!!!

Never read the Doon books... wasn't too impressed w/the original movies but I didn't have the books for reference so my opinion on that is irrelevant.

I read the book way back when it was first published in serial in the sixties. Denis Villeneuve is a Dune nerd and he is one of the best directors out there. Should be a good watch.

Just another remake.  Hollywood must be dead and so drained of ideas.

What's in the box... Pain.  Nice to see they kept the script the same as the original.

I can't wait   :fish_sleep:

Yep, first movie is the first half of the book. Give or take. I'm gonna be that guy in movies who is upset when it ends at the "wrong" place...As there is no "right" place lol..."Give me mooooore!!!"

To each their own. That part is right from the book, so yeah, they pretty much had to redo it as is... I really like the library they are in, but again nerd..

Most probably since there's no Feyd Rautha in this one.

Really hope so. Doesn't looks like they go beyond Rabban's arc. No emperor betrayal, etc.

I have a lot of faith in Villenueve, the guy did an awesome work with Blade Runner sequel imo.

Thought this thread was going to be about the Dune RTS game series. I am disappointed. Anyone else play those?

This is the last one that was made:  https://www.mobygames.com/game/playstation/dune-2000_

I played the heck out of Dune 2000.

Cast looks good, glad they're splitting it into two movies. Pretty excited!

The only Dune game I ever did was back in the 1990s on my Sega Genesis.

It was developed by Westwood Studios, the people that made Command & Conqueror.

This thread has stirred a childhood memory in me... I thought for years I saw a Paul action figure at a long gone KB toys....some people thought I was nuts, but here they are:

I'm gonna wager he didn't end up under to many Christmas trees, but you never know, lol.

Are people going to remember the Dune books. This movie is going to be made for people, who know nothing about Dune.

You'll find that to be the case with lots of things.

How many have read Tolkien's books compared to those that only saw the movies?  I'm in the latter group.

Or a high profile, more recent thing, how many people have read Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books compared to those that know the IP solely because of the "Game of Thrones" HBO TV show?

I've never read the Dune books.  But I did see the 80s movie as a little kid.  I had no idea what was going on but I did recognize an actor there that I remembered from Excalibur :Smile_trollface:

excalibur_pdvd_475.jpg?w=640&f=1&nofb=1latest?cb=20060824040423&f=1&nofb=1

I also hope you don't expect the movie to be fully faithful to the source material.  Movies have to make a lot of compromises.  Both Jackson series of Tolkien movies had big deviations from the books, supposedly.  As someone that read Martin's ASOIAF books, as nice as HBO's GOT show was for most of its history, the show took tremendous liberties away from the books.

Jackson was very faithful to Lord of Rings books.  Martin's ASOIAF books are way too big, for TV show.

I believe that Patrick Steward was always bald.

It's not just that, the last of Martin's ASOIAF books is Dance with Dragons, which came out at around 2011, the same year the HBO show started.  The writers for the show ran out of book material to act as a base.  Fans of the books are still waiting.

The show also changed some critical events.  It also makes a lot of stuff up, which couldn't be helped because the Martin has never followed up on Dance with Dragons.  The show also killed off characters that are still very much alive in the books and doing important things, or omitted them completely like Lady Stoneheart.

Season 1 was very faithful.  Season 2 was still faithful but you still see some differences from the books.  From here on things deviate pretty big.

As much of a problem the last 2 seasons went down with the show, I will say 4 things that they did great:

1.  The depiction of Tywin Lannister and his portrayal by Charles Dance was absolutely fantastic.  The show made me actually like the character more than his book version despite being disgusted by his actions.

2.  The same thing with Oberyn Martell, though his time in the limelight was short in the show, just like in the books.

3.  Tyrion Lannister's trial in King's Landing was superb in the show.  Dinklage and Dance teared the scene up.  IMO, that was the high point of the TV show.

4.  Visualizing Martin's ASOIAF world for us.  Locations and even depictions of characters.
