That one is more a miracle of the B-17 managing to get back to base than anything else.  The show goes with the PoV of the crew.  The B-17's crew claimed multiple planes killed, but Japanese records purport otherwise.

OMG I loved this series growing up! It made me want to take a career as an air force pilot! Sadly, fate had different plans for me, a car wreak caused multiple internal injuries forcing me to abandon this dream.

Ya I wanted to be a pilot as well but I was hit by this disease I have and its a wonder I can do much of anything. My Grandfather had a Piper Comanche and I flew with him a lot. Been a while since I have flown.

 

Gambier Bay was part of Taffy 3 and was sunk during that battle.

Necro? But still, take Dogfights with a grain of salt... It's very nice and shiny but not entirely accurate... Relatively... But not wholly.

I wholeheartedly embrace USN kills confirmed with guncams.  My particular beef with that particular B-17 episode is that it perpetuates the myth of bomber defensive armament.  Go into a good flight simulator and try to use an unescorted bomber with some friends as gunners (without mouse aim).  I have the greatest of respect for the brave men who crewed those bombers; their sacrifices are too often forgotten.
