Friesland Still Worth Picking up?

Hey all.

Just coming back and shaking the rust off. New EU DD's look fun, and think I might do that for my next line.

I thought about picking up the Friesland before,  but didn't. ( Wasn't sure how I'd do in a DD that didn't have torps)

Coming back though, I don't think I've seen one in any of my games over the past week or so.

So I'm curious- have they fallen out of favor? Is the lack of torpedoes to much to overcome? (I realize great players can make it work, I need something the average player can..)

I realize it requires different Captain skills than the rest of the line, have no problem switching them around, just looking for a trainer than will also make some credits.

Just wondering what opinions are.

Thanks!

If you’re looking for a trainer for the line, the t10 would be the better option if 2 million fxp is within your budget. But it won’t farm credits anywhere near as well as Friesland. That being said...

As a non DD player, I think Friesland is a lot of fun. Sure it’s a lot easier for an enemy ship to rush your smoke and push you out since you don’t have torps, but as long as you have team support to spot enemy ships you’re still a threat to light armor (DDs, super light cruisers, super structure). Playing solo in randoms is definitely riskier because you’re relying on random players to keep things spotted or help fund destroyers (since your detection is high for a destroyer hunter), but still workable if you’re a decent DD player and can make other destroyer hunter DDs work.

If you want to use the t9 as a trainer for the main line, either you’ll be running Friesland with a sub optimal build, or you’ll need to get your Friesland captain up to 19 points ASAP and use it to farm elite commander xp.

It’s within my budget and I still wouldn’t buy it.

No smoke.

I went 2/5 in Randoms, and survived 4/5. Can’t really remember how I played it.

225+ games in Co-op, and been having fun in it there.

Usually try to set up to support a cap and kill the first bot DD through, then adjust as needed to farm fires.

Playing Friesland in Co-op, with no torpedoes, has taught me more in six+ months about shifting fire, and knowing when to run like hell, than the previous four+ years combined.

At work right now, so can’t check to be sure.

I bought Friesland through the tech tree to avoid having a Captain come with it.

I think I just put my Gryf driver in it, (3-4 points?) and went to town.

Have whatzizname from Strong Willed, but haven’t done anything with him.

Friesland is an okay IKEA trainer, just remember to set aside 3 points for TAE.

As for why she's not seen... she's always been a more niche ship at a tier where the DD's are at their strongest. Also Pommermania has been sweeping the game and that BB is about as resistant to Friesland's strengths as a BB can be.

Personally I would recommend just grinding out EU DDs instead of buying Friesland. It's just not versatile enough for me to warrant a purchase.

When you compare it to it's T9 tech tree counterpart, you lose torps and a heal for faster guns and smoke. Although the guns have incredible DPM, I think you still have to consider that using them is difficult. You'd need to rely on smoke and islands to safely attack. These are things you don't have to rely on with the tech tree ships as the torpedoes are excellent for attacking from stealth and open water (13.5 km at T9). You can still shoot over islands too.

All things considered, the ship seems rather useless if there is radar, and there are very few things you can do to stop a push if you have no smoke or support. You will have to focus more on conserving HP and smoke for prolonged fights.

If you really want such an experience, I would honestly recommend buying a Kidd. With it you get a heal, occasionally better MM (It's a T8 ship), and even a torp set just in case anyone rushes you. The AA is excellent too.

Hey

I think Friesland is worth picking up, its a lot of fun even without torps and it's always satisfying watching airplanes melt it todays meta.   I do miss torps sometimes but the guns are consistent.

Friesland is a hell of a drug. It can lead you to ruin.

About a year ago, I bought Smolensk. It's a great ship, but I barely played it...because Friesland. Soon after Smolensk, I bought Friesland, and oh good lord those guns! That range! The AA! Those fires! My teammates ran Smolensk, and I ran Friesland, and we mined the salt.
Then I bought Småland. I bought it because I loved Friesland, and now Småland has become my favorite ship.

Friesland has cost me dearly:
200k coal (Smolensk with coupon, all now wasted.)
+ 1 million Free XP for Friesland itself.
+ 2 million more Free XP for Småland.

P.S. I use the same 19-point captain on Friesland, Błyskawica, Småland, and Östergötland.

Friesland is great. I've only been playing a few months, but she's my most-played ship. I do have my frustrations with her. The main one is, I never seem to set much fires with her. She has gotten me, in 53 battles, exactly 0 Arsonists or Witherer medals. Maybe I get unlucky with fire RNG or maybe kills just get secured too quickly, but that's what it is.

The commander rework has also nerfed her reload slightly since old BFT was a 10% buff and the new skill, Main Battery and AA Specialist, a 5% improvement only. But that affected ALL destroyers, and it's not like her reload was non-competitive...

Note that her lack of torpedoes means it's very tough for her to influence games in the longer-term, short of hunting-down DDs (a job she's decent at, but not specialized for). However that is not a negative point: it IS what she is. It'd be like saying 'Smolensk is annoying because her AP isn't great' well yeah, she's an HE spammer. Same with Friesland. She's a dakka boat with no torps and that's what she is. Anyone playing her knows that well. In-fact her lack of torps allow the player to focus solely on guns, and therefore have fewer compromising situations insisting on torpedo use.

Speaking of AP, her AP rounds are really good. Ok, her guns, in fact, are good, regardless of the rounds.

I just find it a very good boat, but I really need to improve my win-rate and average damage with her (I focus hard on DDs so my average damage is low on all my DDs).

I don't use Premiums to train captains (my playing time is limited to an incoming baby, so I want to spend it grinding lines), but she wouldn't be very good; her line's DDs are torpedo boats. Not just that, but she's getting migrated to the Dutch nation line in a couple of months (I think, or this summer).

Oh she's an AMAZING credit earner. On top-table, decent games and with flags, I will average 1MM or around there. Really convenient...!

One thing worth nothing.... Friesland may actually perform even a bit better soon.

-Fearless brawler will lose the concealment penalty. You will basically be able to get a 10% reload buff without any downside. I suspect that a lot of players might respec for it.
-If you find yourself shooting AP often enough to equip "Extra Heavy AP",  it'll get buff from 5 to 7.5%. 2.5% boost to your AP DPM is always good.

But yeah, the move to the Dutch nation may require you to train a new captain; no details have been announced about that, not to my knowledge. But you can expect to lose access to unique commander Jerzy at that point.

Fearless Brawler will have some benefit for Friesland, but Friesland will spend most of its time shooting from smoke, so the buff will often not apply.
