Research Bureau question

Greetings. I have a question regarding the qualifications for the Research Bureau.
I know that you have had to have unlocked 5 Tier X ships in order to qualify for the Research Bureau.
However, does that mean that you have to have all 5 ships active at the same time....or do you need to have purchased the ships through Tier X at some point?
I currently have 4 Tier X ships active and am grinding for the 5th. (Currently at Tier VIII on the 5th line.) I was considering selling one of the Tier X ships to get some credits to purchase a Tier IX ship for the Ranked Sprint coming up, but am afraid that I'll have to re-purchase the ship in order to activate the Research Bureau.

Just looking for clarification.
Thanks!!

Starting from Update 0.8.7, any player with five (5) unlocked tech tree Tier X ships automatically qualifies for the Research Bureau.

Immediately on qualifying, a player is awarded 10,000 Research PointsResearch Points (RP) that can be redeemed in the Armory.

In the Armory, a Research Bureau page is enabled that describes the loot for which RP can be exchanged, currently ships, Free XP, and signals.

So according to the Wiki you just have to have them unlocked.

Research Bureau

The Research Bureau provides a way for highly accomplished players to earn ships otherwise unobtainable, and have some fun doing it.
They erase progress on a tech tree ship line back through Tier II and re-earn the ships all the way up to Tier X.

(link)

The Research Bureau - How It Works

Contents

The principle of player progression in World of Warships is moving from lower tier to higher tier ships up to the apex of each branch — the Tier X ship. However, in doing so, players often leave intermediate-tier ships behind. These ships offer game play experiences that are equally interesting as those of Tier X ships. And often, a now-more experienced player will discover that his lower-tier ships seem to play better than when he was first grinding through them.

Qualification

Starting from Update 0.8.7, any player with five (5) unlocked tech tree Tier X ships automatically qualifies for the Research Bureau.

Immediately on qualifying, a player is awarded 10,000 Research PointsResearch Points (RP) that can be redeemed in the Armory.

In the Armory, a Research Bureau page is enabled that describes the loot for which RP can be exchanged, currently ships, Free XP, and signals.

Earning Research Points

After the initial award of 10,000 Research Points, more RP can be earned by resetting a line of tech tree ships, then re-earning and playing them. A line is defined as those ships that must be unlocked consecutively to obtain a Tier X ship. (In the case of split lines, e.g. the USN CL and CA cruiser lines, each line includes the ships that are common to both (in this case the Tier II-V USN cruisers)). Gunship lines consist of 10 ships each; aircraft carrier lines consist of 4 ships each.

Research Point per ship win

In order to earn Research Points, a line is "reset" as described below. The ships of the line must then be unlocked again. When each of the five ships Tiers VI to X of the line is in port, winning a battle[1] in it earns Research Points. Each higher tier ship earns progressively more RP. Gunship lines earn a maximum of 10,000 Research Points per reset. Carrier lines earn less: 8,000 Research Points. More than one line may be reset at the same time.

Resetting a line

Each tech tree line with a Tier X ship will display, in the Tech Tree panel in Port, a button below the line to reset the line. Pressing this button will cause:

  • all ships in the line, Tiers II through X, to be sold for credits Credits (at the normal Sell price),[2]
  • all modules for those ships, mounted or saved in Inventory, to be sold for credits Credits,
  • all Upgrades on or for those ships to be de-mounted to Inventory at no cost,
  • all mounted camouflages and signals to be de-mounted,
  • all Commanders on those ships to be moved to Reserve.
  • All Elite XP on those ships is transferred to the Tier 1 ship, where it may be used to unlock the Tier II ship.

Seasons

Each Research Bureau season lasts three months. In each season, the first line reset becomes eligible for double (2x) Research Points Research Points when the Tiers VI-X ships in the line are played to a win. Season end dates may be viewed by scrolling to the bottom of the tech-tree.

  • Season 1 - 21 Aug. 2019[3] to 19 Nov. 2019[4]
  • Season 2 - 19 Nov. 2019 to 17 Feb. 2020[5]
  • Season 3 - 17 Feb. 2020 to 17 May 2020[6]
  • Season 4 - 17 May 2020 to 15 Aug. 2020
  • Season 5 - 16 Aug. 2020 to 15 Nov. 2020 (est.)

Note that the 2x season bonus does not depend on the first line reset being unlocked or played first. The second line reset may be completed and played first, but it will earn only the base Research Points.

Regrinds do not need to be completed within a specific season to obtain the 2x RP bonus.

RP Loot

Research Points Research Points can be exchanged in the Armory for items, most notably the unique ships Colbert (57,000 Research Points), Ohio (62,000 Research Points), Slava (63,000 Research Points), and Siegfried (47,000 Research Points) and Unique Upgrades. In the future more items will become available for RP. See the Armory page for updates and details.

Techniques

There are several ways to use the Research Bureau, understanding that there are two goals: Acquire Research Points Research Points (RP), and enjoy playing low- and mid-tier ships again.

Play It Your Way

This is the longest and may be the most rewarding way to earn back the ships of a reset line. Start with the Tier I ship of the line and play it to earn enough XP Ship XP to unlock the Tier II ship. Buy it. Repeat through Tier X.

As with the first time you did it, no extra experience or credits are required; the ships earn it themselves. Oh, you might toss in a little FXP to get over a hump or two, but the play's the thing.

Blowing By

Free XP Free XP will unlock any tech tree ship, so with enough Free XP you can unlock the whole line, selectively purchasing and playing ships as desired. This technique certainly saves time, but you might miss discovering that that long-hated ship is actually pretty good in your now-skilled hands.

Level up to Six

The ships of Tiers II through V are inexpensive to unlock  Ship XP and inexpensive to purchase  Credits. Some players will immediately FXP past them to Tier VI, and some will use them to earn credits for those expensive high-tier ships.

Doing A Split

Some tech tree branches split into two lines:

  • the 120px-SOV_flag.png Soviet destroyer branch splits after Tier VII.
  • the Wows_flag_Japan.png Japanese destroyer branch splits after Tier IV.
  • the Wows_flag_USA.png American cruiser branch splits after Tier V.

The splits make resetting and re-grinding those lines a little easier. Resetting both sides of a split line can save a fair amount of time or Free XP over re-grinding two full lines separately.

Using the 120px-SOV_flag.png Soviet tree as an example, a player who has unlocked both Khabarovsk and Grozovoi can reset both at the same time and need unlock the Tier II-VII ships only once to complete both destroyer lines. (In this case, although they are common to both, unlocking and winning in Gnevny and Minsk earns RP Research Points for only one line.)

Stacking resets

For a player rich in Free XP Free XP, this is the easiest way to accumulate Research Points Research Points (RP). The Tier VI-X ships of a reset line need not be played to qualify for RP at an eventual first win.

A player can reset, then unlock an entire line using Free XP without purchasing or playing a single ship, and the Tier VI-X ships will "remember" that they are due those Research Points at the first win. Then the player can reset, then unlock the same line without purchasing or playing a ship, and the Tier VI-X ships will "remember" that they are due more Research Points at the first win. When those ships eventually are purchased and played for a win, the accrued Research Points are awarded.

Example

1) In Season 1 a player unlocks his fifth tech tree Tier X ship and immediately receives 10,000 Research Points.
2) He resets his Wows_flag_Germany.png KM cruiser line. All Tier II+ KM cruisers in port etc. are sold. Then he spends (roughly 650,000) FXP Free XP to unlock all nine ship through Tier X yet purchases none of them. His Tier VI through X ships thus gain the right to play for double Research Points (the Season 1 bonus) at any future time — 20,000 Research Points for all five.
3) In the same season, the player resets his KM cruiser line again, and again unlocks Free XP all nine ships. His Tier VI through X ships thus gain the right to play for another RP award — an additional 10,000 Research Points for all five.
4) As his first reset of Season 2, the player resets his KM cruiser line for the third time, and again spends Free XP to unlock all nine ships. His Tier VI through X ships thus earn the right to play for yet another double Research Points award (the Season 2 bonus) — 20,000 Research Points.
5) He then purchases his five Tier VI-X ships and plays five Co-op games, all wins, thus earning a total of 50,000 Research Points to add to the 10,000 Research Points he already had, giving him 60,000 Research Points — enough to buy Colbert (57,000 Research Points).

He has spent roughly 2M Free XP, (assuming he buys no modules) ~51M Credits, and played 5 games. Elapsed time, about 2 hours total.

Video.

@Sovereigndawg got it right.  :cap_look:

You only need 5 tech tree ships unlocked (you don't have to buy them, just have them researched.)  On the off chance that you researched the Moskva, you will need to re-research the Al. Nevsky (as Moskva is no longer a tech tree ship.)

Thanks all. I had read the above line under Qualifications, and it can be read as saying that you had to have all 5 ships. It is a bit vaguely worded.
So, I will likely sell one of my Tier Xs so I can play the ranked sprint. Three of my 4 Tier X ships just kinda sit there right now anyway since I am grinding my 5th line.

Just a reminder the Anchorage Dock (upcoming event) will/can also reward RB points.  Upon receiving the reward, this will 'unlock' the RB for all players who don't have the required number of tier X ships.

Another reminder,

Tier X in the anniversary event, the first win will reward a super container.  You may want to keep your X's   :)

The next update has a snowflake type event and you get a super container for each tier ten that you win a battle with so you may want to wait.

When does the ranked sprint season start (if it hasn't already)?

Just keep grinding the line & you may be able to earn the credits for the T9 by then...or at least maybe be able to sell a lower tier ship to make up the difference so you can keep your T10 for the super container.

RS starts on Friday.

Worst case you can sell one of your t-X, and then sell 100xJuliet Charlie signals your going to get from your anniversary super container to help pay to re-buy the ship  you sold.

You can also sell stuff from the inventory. Try that before you sacrifice. You will often have redundant modules or useless camos.

You're gonna lose 50% value on a T10 sale to rebuy it.

He probably has 100x some signals/camos or some such in stock he can sell now to get the T9.

Have you checked your inventory for alternate options OP? Maybe some A gun/torp/hull modules or something like that you have in abundance you will never use on the ships that have the upgraded  guns/torps/hulls even.

The problem is that I need about 9.2M credits to pick up an Iowa.
I am thinking I may just sit out this ranked sprint, because I don't want to lose the value of the Tier X BB, plus miss out on an additional super container.

So, I just purchased an Iowa for the ranked sprint.
No need to sell off a Tier X ship. I spent the past couple of days running my Montana in random battles with a couple of flags for credits. I was able to pull in just under 6M credits in 2 days....and I made up the rest by selling off a couple of mid tier ships that I rarely play.
Thanks to all for steering me clear of taking the easy route and selling a Kremlin  or Kurfurst.

Hi Newb!
Yeah....almost done with ranked. Running a secondary build on this Iowa because these 3v3 matches usually wind up in close. (A secondary build on an Iowa, really?  LOL)
Rank #2...just looking to finish it off.
I might even keep the Iowa when I am done....but then right back to grinding for my 5th Tier X.
