Anyone Tried Asymmetric Battle Yet?

Like the title says, Has anyone tried the asymmetric battle yet?  I'm interested in your take.

I've tried a couple battles and every time so far it's a complete rout for the tier 8 team.

It's funny watching a tier 8 BB outrun the tier 6 DDs and CLs.

It's also interesting to play the battles on the operations maps as well.  Definitely a different experience there.

I tried it on the Public Test Server, this morning.

I had a good time.  It was a welcome change of pace.

I won some and I lost some games.  Still had fun.

Already a thread on it. It will be a lot of fun, though usually the higher tier team loses, in my experience. Unfortunately CVs still ruin that one like they do all others. Sucks that the dev obsession with CVs means there are no modes where you can just play your ship...

What I want to know is which low tier ships will perform best.

It's like being uptiered, so any T6 will do fine.

Since many consider the GC to be OP, I will be bringing mine to the party.

Bit leery at the moment.

Wish I could try it in Co-op to get a feel for things without having to deal with Randoms.

Waaaaaaay back in the day; a couple of unicum players would fail div into T10 games with Umikaze, and use it to terrorize Yamato’s.

CV's *are* ships.   They just happen to have a lot of planes, by comparison.  ;-)

I was enjoying putting my PTS Ryujo, Furious and Ark Royal up against some higher-tier competition.  Had a couple of games with multiple CV's on each team, too.

Anyway, it is Public Test Server.  So try stuff and see what works and what doesn't.  Keyword = Test.  :-)

Mostly DDs like Kamikaze/T-61 that can terrorize BBs with impunity. I don't think there are any T6 DDs that can realistically win a fair fight against a T8 DD so the meta is just to have excellent torps and ideally good conceal so your cruisers can light them up. Fushun could be good,  torp Monaghan might be really interesting since it's Benson levels of torps.

In terms of cruisers, stuff like Leander is probably pretty decent since it has smoke and a heal to hopefully keep itself alive. Otherwise high DPM is king so you can try to burst them down before they decide to focus you. Pensacola, for example, is probably one of the worse choices since it's fragile as hell and doesn't offer much in terms of gimmicks or DPM. La Gal/De Grasse would be excellent since they're mobile and can easily set permafires (La Gal especially thanks to MBRB.) The T5 cruisers are all stupidly fragile and will rely on luck or excellent positioning.

In terms of BBs, it depends but I would say Pyotr/izmail are the strong contenders because less ships means less risk of being crossfired and they are insane for their tiers with guns that punch well above their weight and stupidly good armor.  Kongo and Fuso might be alright, too. Iron Duke might be a sleeper choice since none of the low tier BBs can really rely on being able to overmatch, so spamming HE with your cruisers might very well be viable.

I have a feeling this'll end up like Historical Battles did for World of Tanks, where one team with a Jagdtiger and a Tiger II basically just ran through a full team of Jumbos and E8s like a field of clover.

For sure. It's a super enjoyable game mode, other than the CVs. But the T8s are too weak relative to the T6s. They probably need to bring in T9s.

Flamu showed a couple rounds on his vid this week.  It looks interesting, and he showed that both sides can win.  Going to need some experimentation.  His take was  that you absolutely needed the Radar/Sonar ships in the high tiers because of the sheer number of DDs flying around.

Yeah BUT it is like Ranked -- radar cruisers quickly come under BB fire.

I liked running DD's low tier. Good conceal and can spam torps. I tried cv's both low and high tier. Didn't do great but I think the spotting helped when high tier and t5/6 really don't have much in the way of AA.

Pretty fun. Being the top tier isn't good because that means you have to rely on your team much more, which are questionable in the best of times.

Since it seems T8 Premium BBs are pretty popular, the Kamikaze R will be my go-to.

I remember that; it was hilarious with the ultra-fast reload, 8 km range on the torps and the low detection range on the DD. Good times.

Played several matches as both high and low tier. Bring what youre best in and be adaptable. Cleveland is beast and chappy is very strong for the high tier. Have used several DDs and Dallas at low tier and done well with those. BBs and CAs arenty strong suit so haven't done much with them yet. But both sides are more than capable of winning.

Saw the tiers on the main website, but nothing about how to get battle tokens to be the higher tier ships?

Did I miss, or misunderstand something?

Play low tier token free and earn the tokens there. Only costs tokens to play high tier.

Forgot. You get a small amount playing high but it is unsustainable

I did well with my Texas and I would say that any ship you do well with in normal up tiering will do well in this since it is tier 5 - 8.

Depending on the player count at the time you have a good chance of seeing a team of tier 8 bots on the PT.

Tried it and thought that it was fun.  As someone else mentioned, it’s very team-dependent if you’re the smaller # uptiers.  I think that the tokens, if carried over and required to play on the Live server, will put a rather quick end to this playmode as most players simply will not want to go out of their way to do something extra for them.

any 15" and 16" BBs should be decent bottom tier so QE, Warspite, Bayern, WV41 and Mutsu should do well.

You gain battle tokens for each game played. Assuming PTS numbers still stand:

250 for T5

200 for T6

50 for T7

20 for T8

It costs 500 to play a T7 or 8

Visby gets owned easily.  I can tell you that much.

I had a few games with carriers only on one side.  Once it was two T6 carriers...and we lost.  Ark Royal and I think Ryuujou....against Baltimore, Hipper, two Bismarcks, and a Scharnhorst B.  The rest of us were having trouble getting close to the German secondary spec ships, and the Baltimore was shredding all the planes.  I was in Visby...our other destroyer was a Fubuki.  It didn't go well.  I think we only killed the Hipper, and drove the Baltimore off.  But by then the German battleships sank everything, and hunted down Ark Royal.  They didn't get Ryuujou since they won on points first.

The other one happened a few times.  A single T8 carrier, usually Lexington.  Those tended to lose as well.  One was Lexington escorted by two Minsks and an Asashio.  That was over quick as We only had one battleship, New York.  The Asashio was mostly useless, and the Minsk were outranged.

Only did a few T7/T8 half of the game.  One was two Baltimore, a Abremarle with a Massachusetts.   They had four destroyers.  We popped radar and hydro, but they had three Japanese destroyers sitting right outside the cap circle waiting for us.  Both Baltimores were sink in the torpedo and shell fire madness.  The Abremarle had gone off alone to the other cap, and was chased down eventually.  The Mass did a lot of carrying.  It survived, but lost due to points.  All that was left of the enemy team were a pair of T5 Japanese destroyers and a Marblehead.  I know of of those DDs had only 56 hp left, as the other Baltimore and Mass had nearly sunk it when the Baltimore was sunk and the Mass lost sight of it for good.  Those destroyers put a lot of effort into trying to torpedo the Mass, but it kept not going in straight lines, so most of the torpedoes missed.

Most of the time I saw just one map...one I'd never seen before (Ultimate Frontier).  But once I got the Killer Whale map instead.

Sank a Vladivostok with an ARP Haruna.  That was fun.  14 inch guns will still citadel a broadsiding Soviet battleship.
