The one-two punch between dive bombers and torpedo planes looks especially nasty.  The fires caused by the dive bombers may cause your target to prematurely hit the "R" repair button, leaving them especially vulnerable to any flooding criticals from even a modest torpedo strike.  That's certainly something people need to be aware of when they're under assault by attack planes.

As a high-tier aircraft carrier player, what challenges do you find you face for setting up proper attack runs like the ones you highlight here?  In almost every case, I see you picking on isolated ships, is that by choice (or simply grace that in many of these matches, there aren't a lot of targets)?  How much does concerted anti-aircraft fire screens play into your decision making when lining up targets?  I also notice that many of your targets here elect to turn away (instead of towards) your torpedo planes when they do make evasive maneuvers at all.  Does turning towards the salvo help their survivability in your experience?

As somebody who mains IJN CA as AA cruisers and sets himself between enemy planes and friendly BBs, yes. Turning towards the torpedo planes gives a higher chance of surviving...At least for me. It all depends on which angle they are coming from, if it is more from the front, I try to steer towards them, if from the side, I'll try to turn my back at them and swim along with the torpedoes (This gives more time to do maneuvers as the torps will need to catch you as well. Works mostly just for ship launched torps tho) Mostly I drive towards the planes as it is easier for me to fulfill my role better as I get more time to shoot them before they get to the BB

However these BBs and the likes were doomed from the start as they didn't start their maneuvers before the planes dropped their torps. There is just not enough time to do anything after they're in the water hence you should try to start the evasives as if the planes were torps themselves and try to align yourself beforehand. Most people just binoc away until it's way too late :/

I've noticed as much.  Some Youtubers, like Baron, are pretty attack-plane conscious most of the time (though they do get tunnel visioned every now and then).  Those that keep an eye on their minimap and maneuver early seem less likely to be harassed.  As damning as many voices have been against torpedo attacks (and speaking from my own limited observations that are not based on first hand accounts), it seems to me that those who suffer most from torpedo strikes are those who make themselves easy targets.

On the higher class aircraft carriers do you have to use dive bombers or can they be switched out for torp planes? All the videos I've seen torp planes seem far more effective than dive bombers but that's just from watching. Is there any particular reason someone would use dive bombers over torpedo planes?

The good news for us is that the USN battleships are supposed to be AA escorts historically for carriers so we will be protected against clickers using those mighty ships. The Yamato AA guns are also more powerful than the USN tier 10 Cruiser as well so with the right perks and upgrades those carriers will not be as OP as Arty against our battleships. :)

From what I've seen of Youtubers, you choose from a list of preset combinations of planes.

For example, if your carrier could house 3 squadrons the combinations might include but also be limited to:

  • Two torpedo squadrons, one fighter squadron
  • Two fighter squadrons, one dive bomber squadron
  • Two torpedo squadrons, one dive bomber squadron

There may not be an option for two fighter squadrons + 1 torpedo squadron, or two dive bomber squadrons + whatever.  There isn't an option at present to mix and match to your own preference.
