I was wondering what folks think about the Kii in this day and age? The Amagi is prob my fav ship in the game so far and I thought it might be cool to get the Kii. My question is whether the kii sacrifices too much for her alternative features. I was thinking I would drop some points to refine her torpedos and secondaries, which have high dpm. I would not rely on these features but they look interesting for when my amagi sometimes gets forced into close action. I am mostly worried about the sigma being one less tenth than the amagi.

.1 sigma less is not even noticable in general gameplay, only over dozens of games of actual data collecting.

Spec'ing the secondaries is a waste in my opinion. Secondary builds are expensive, pointwise, and Kii is better served with a survivability build.

She can do work, as long as you play carefully. She sacrifices armor on an already iffy armor scheme for her speed, firepower and torpedoes.

To me it sounds like you're assuming that KII is just an Amagi clone and should be played the same way, but that isn't exactly a good way to take advantage of her, to me best way to play KII is like a Kongou, only at teir XIII. Try to keep your distance but don't be afraid to close in if you have the advantage. KII has a few things to help it in close range that Kongou dosen't, she has torps and Duki secondaries, so she can shred ships and with her maneuverability she can angle and troll shots very well. Her good gun and torpedo arcs also means she has less broadside exposed to bring a good chunck of firepower to bear.

Like all ships though, she has to work with your gameplay stlye, if you like to get close and hit ships with your sword KII isn't for you. If you like to sit and tank shots, then KII is not your ship. If you like to sit in the back and snipe, then KII can work for you, but you are missing out on the fun she can give you, I can't tell you how many times I've trolled Teir X's with the torps of hers.

I don't mind Kii. The AA improvement over Amagi is nice to have (not that AA does a whole lot in the current meta) and the torpedoes are situationally useful. The inferior protection and torpedo belt compared to Amagi is something of hurdle to get over though. I personally think Amagi is better overall in the current meta, but Kii isn't bad.

If you are good with Amagi, Kii is a perfectly sound choice. I'm not sure I would drop points on the secondaries or torpedoes though. The secondaries aren't true secondary build-worthy and if you are in range long enough to fire torps and actually reload something has gone terribly wrong. I agree with Lert, go survival, and possibly boost AA if you have spare points since Kii has good AA. Kii was never a commonly-played ship so a lot of CV captains don't know it has good AA and will attack it like an Amagi.

I've run into a Kii recently in my Hak who was secondary spec. He played it very very well and took home AA defense and a few secondary kills. You play her like a German BB...snipe...then close in in the late game and she can brawl very well.

Kii is really good ship that shares my Amagi captain. I use PT, EM, AR, CE, SI, BFT, and Vigilance skills. The last skill is thanks to such a long hull torpedoe armed ships can get the idea it might be fun to torpedo the ship and so the added heads up is nice. Modules are just the normal ones you would want on a stealthy BB.

If you know how to play Battlecruiser style ships then it does well which is basically stay on the move keeping the ranges medium to long range, and not getting too close to anything really heavy in open water fight. The torpedoes when situations allows for them to be used hit really hard.

Armor on the Kii in my use of it anyway does not feel all that different from Amagi as I allow neither of the ships to sustain full side on hits to prevent citadel damage. And have been running 60+ WR in her for long time now.

If I got the Kii, it would be for close-range torpedo brawling in co-op. I have a Japanese captain set up for that, for the LULz. I also have a Japanese survival build BB captain who recently became a 19 pointer.

I would also go so far as to get the Kobayashi camo so that I could make hefty bank in co-op and make even heftier bank in Randoms.

The main issue that I see is that her torpedoes would always be tempting me to do foolish things in PvP that I might not otherwise do. My Ignis Purgatio does not do that.

The Ragnarok and Ignis Purgation both Amagi clones, but with 0.1 better sigma and a slower reload. They're closer to that more "pure" Amagi experience that you love.

Kii is very similar but trades main battery accuracy for excellent AA, monster secondaries (though it's unusable due to short range), and torpedoes.

All three are great choices.

Thanks all for the input. I bought her and she runs well. The guns perform nicely, the AA allows for more independent positioning that I usually avoid with amagi. I will have to go with a more survivability orientation from my original setup that I proposed, though I still wonder if manual secondary's would give it enough sting to justify the points. What I am assuming is that when I get into a brawl - which I will rightly avoid - is that those secondary are going to tip me over the edge and help with a kill.

If you're that close to a red ship the torps will do more to secure a kill than the Secondaries. If you don't normally brawl with the Amagi I wouldn't advise doing it with the Kii even with the torps.

Originally... it was an AA specialist that had torps. Problem was this was back in the RTS CV play and rarely got shine.

I would say one of the best or at least most fun features is that most people don't realize it has torps. Just played Amagi in ranked. Ty for reminding me about this ship, might be worth a giggle with all the Odin captains out there trying to use their new toy.

Kii took me to Rank 12 last night.  We'll see if it can take me further.
