Good review Zoup. My wife had heard me clamoring to see it off and on after the first commercial came out. We watched it together and we both really liked the movie a lot.

Once submarines are entered into WoW’s in what ever capacity. I think a Greyhound/ The Good Shepherd style operation would be really nice. One that could be played either from the Allied convoy escort or the German wolf pack perspective.

Yep good review, liked the film a lot. As zoup said characters apart from the capt really don't imprint on you but that doesn't detract from the film itself.

I would definitely play those Operations or even a convoy PvP game. Convoy PvP subs win if sink majority of the convoy. Escorts win if sink all subs or get from point A to B with majority of convoy.

The mess mate Cleveland stood out for me and the XO got a fair bit of screen time, but yes Its a action movie and isn't big on character development. Though as a result one can kinda put themselves in the place of one of the random sailors and immerse in the experience.

Curious, did the subs really track them like that? I thought they couldn't keep up.

Activated free trial year of Apple+ just to be able to watch the movie Grey Hound, and greatly enjoyed it. Very well done I thought.

Even some of the decisions / details made in the story were pretty accurate I felt.

WARNING MOVIE SPOILERS BELOW, ONLY READ IF YOU HAVE WATCHED THE FILM OR ELSE DO NOT MIND SPOILERS!!!

Spoiler

Like I felt for example the part where there were men in the water and a call was coming in to catch up with the convoy to assist. Stopping for a moment to pick up the men nearby in the water seemed quite accurate as it is in keeping with international maritime traditions as well as a bit of international law I think. Then after picking up the men in the water they proceeded to go and assist with combat again.

Also felt the almost colliding to colliding, friendly fire, U-Boats getting in close to ships, Captain’s instructions to not boiling but instead warm water to de-ice viewport glass ( Boiling would have shattered the iced up glass), running low on ammunition, being concerned about fuel, using light flashing signals instead of radio to avoid enemy detection, and other such details were very accurate.

Yes they could track a convoy like that as they would travel surfaced until they needed to submerge, they would space U-Boats with 1 every few Kilometers so that they would have high chances of spotting convoy, then they would radio back to Germany and the U-Boat command would then organize the wolf pack based on this info.

So often times the U-Boats could be ahead of the convoy anyway, but even if they had to come up from behind the convoy they could manage. The reason being is even if the Convoy had some ships that could do 30knts+ they would not travel at that speed. What ever the slowest ship in the convoy traveled that was the speed of the entire convoy speed. So if the slowest speed was 5 or 8 knts guess what the convoy speed was? Now even with this consideration for the slowest ship in the convoy when they were heading out on the journey, if you broke down the convoy would not stop nor slow down for you. So if a ship broke down odds are they were left behind so they had better hop to get moving ASAP. And as cruel as this sounds it was a matter of safety for the entire convoy since if they sat around indefinitely they odds would increase exponentially for the U-Boats would show up and start attacking.

I was really looking forward to seeing the movie when the previews came out in the spring, but  it is exclusively behind Apple's paywall now so that probably won't happen. :Smile-angry:

If you have purchased an Apple device within the last year such as a phone or something then you are likely eligible for a Year of Apple+ for Free just like I was.

What's the difference if you pay Apple to watch it or pay the movie theater to see it?  It's money spent either way.

I can tell you from 10+ years as a deck officer on warships that I thought this movie was great. Between the formal steering commands and all the crew nuances were spot on.  The only thing was the German radio calls... only thing I could have done without.

Ahoy mates,

I just watched Greyhound and I really enjoyed it. It was virtually nonstop action from start to finish, the ship effects were really incredible, and the combat sequences/ship sequences were extremely well done and believable.

(spoilers below)

Spoiler

The taunting German radio calls were a bit ridiculous, as no German U-boat commander would have ever done that. If he had been foolish enough to do so, he would not have lived long due to radio direction finding. Additionally, it was quite unrealistic to see the U-boats staying on the surface to fight it out with DDs and DD escorts. With only one deck gun and maybe a couple of small AA guns against the firepower on those surface warships, the battle would have been over b4 it started. All in all though, I found it to be a really good movie, and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat, as it were, for virtually the entire 1.5 hours.

I found the movie to be boring and forgettable. But it didn't stop me from using Tom as an avatar!

It's not the money. I would gladly buy it as a standalone. It's that it only exists on Apple's service which I don't have. They have not offered it for purchase that I am aware of.

Even if you haven't bought an Apple device in the last year, like most of the streaming services, you can try it for a week free and then cancel.

My girlfriend bought a Macbook last month, so we ended up with the free year, but the free week is more than enough time to watch a movie that's an hour and a half long. No need to purchase it at all.

We both enjoyed it a lot.

Yes. Therein lies the problem. I haven't owned an Apple device since my iphone 4. I would buy it as a standalone in a heartbeat but they aren't making it available for purchase. If they have and I missed it please let me know, but I've been checking and I haven't seen it. It's not available on Amazon, Google, Microsoft or Movies Anywhere.

That might be worth a try if I can stream it free for a week from the web browser. I am most bummed that the Foundation series will be on Apple TV exclusively.

...

Now that I checked you can watch it from the web browser.

Be sure and catch 1917 while you have AppleTV for the week... if you haven't seen it already. It's on there also.

seriously, ....tom runs himself low on depth charges, then subs convienently start fighting on surface...surface action is a NO NO in a sub...no naval exp. needed to realize almost certain death

Ty. :)

That one was available normally so I got it when it came out since I am a fan of war movies. It was OK. I felt it missed a lot of the horror of WWI. I don't want to wreck it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I thought the end was a lot milder and more reasonable than it should have been. That wasn't very typical of command decisions in WWI. The ending in the old Gallipoli movie I thought was much better.

Yep. If the escort runs low on depth charges, the sub thanks whatever god he worships and goes about his business.

Yeah, that was a huge gripe from me about an otherwise really good movie. No way in H-E double toothpicks is a sub gonna stay on the surface with DDs and DDEs right on them, unless they have no choice. In the one scene where they blow the sub to the surface I can understand, but them surfacing on purpose with escorts ships right there? I call Bravo Sierra on that.

Yeah I would have loved to have simply gotten Grey Hound as stand alone movie on iTunes. But with the Virus Pandemic odds are some movie studios are approaching various alternative methods for movie releases.
