Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is the purpose of what appears to be a  blast shield forward of the AB turrets on some battleships?   I was guessing it would be to dissipate some of the concussion of the main battery, but I'm not sure.

Do you have an image to clarify what you are taking about?

Do you mean the breakwaters, that are usually located just forward of a turret to help push any water that comes over the bow to the sides?
