One Z-39 torp did only 1570 damage on a Kamikaze!?

Kamikaze was seriously damaged, having only 2632 HP left.

I (Z-39) landed a torp on him and the hit only caused 1570 damage, taking him down to 1062.  The torp started flooding, but Kamikaze took other hits and died before he flooded out from my torp.

I know German torps are weak.  But how could a T7 torp do so little damage on a T5 IJN DD?   Under what game mechanics was this possible???

The game mechanic is called damage saturation.

Basically, each part of a ship (bow, superstructure, aft) have their own internal HP value. Once this value drops to zero any damage done to that section is reduced or negated.

I see.  It's true that the red Kamikaze had just eaten a torp from another Kamikaze on my team.

After eating my torp, another Kamikaze torp arrived to finish off the red Kami.

So, this red Kamikaze R (HP = 11,100) took 3 torps to die.  Kami's and Z-39's torps all have 14,400 alpha damage.  14,400 x 3 = 43,200.

This mechanics makes a lot of sense in this situation.

Dmg Saturation... All your torps hit one compartment of the DD... When that happens, zero DMG can result...

On a rare occasion, a DD can eat more than 10 torpedoes and still lives.

Yeah, but forum rules about linking to those kinds of sites prevent us from showing it here.

There is historical precedent for this, at the first naval battle of Guadalcanal the San Fransisco was so damaged and steering blind that when a couple of Japanese ships came across her that they didn't know what it was but fired for awhile and all they did was stir the wreckage up.

This is a very old clip though. As far as I know the mechanics have since changed so a torpedo will always do at least some damage even to a fully saturated section of the target.

As for how you could explain away saturation as a mechanic, your ordnance simply hit a potion of the ship that's already so mangled that there isn't really anything worthwhile left there to damage, all your doing is further mangling what's already basically just mangled steel. It's like blowing up a house with demolition charges vs blowing up the resulting pile of rubble.
