I haven't played anything but cruisers and a few dds in a few years.  I think it's time to start building a few BB lines.  I do have Bismarck, but find it almost unplayable in Randoms with my secondary spec.  So, what are your 'best' and favorite BBs, and of course, why?  Only tech tree please.

Thanks

Sinop at T7 is a go to for me, ranked out using that and Kuznetsov. I still like Monty as well at T10. Wyoming can be fun at T4.

Switching from cruiser, kongo is a battleship That plays like a battle cruiser. Faster than traditional tier 5 battleships and strong guns

A question with many answers, as far as BB lines I'd recommend to a new player that's just starting out the class the US battleships are pretty good for learning the ropes. (as in they are kind of the "standard" BBs of the game without a ton of gimmicks)

Comparatively good AA, good range, good pen on the guns, decently fast and decent handling once you get past T7.

As far as what I'd recommend to someone with a bit more experience under their belt and is more focused on punching people in the face rather than learning the ropes the Russian BBs are pretty damn good in the hands of someone who knows what to do in them. Great armour on the bow and decks, awesome gun accuracy at close range, fast recharging damage control consumables (though they are finite) and they have pretty good AA to round it off the range is somewhat lower than other BBs though. They really get good at T7 and up but until then they are kind of squishy. Generally speaking they have weak broadside armour and you should never show your sides to another BB at close range.

British BBs have enhanced heals and very punishing HE shells that do a ton of damage some people just fire HE all game, though it's not recommended to do so depending on the target. the T8-10 did kind of get a nerf recently to their citadel placement so it's easier to hit but the high tier super heal and some dodging kind of mitigates that. Not very good in a brawl compared to other nations due to their turret rotation speed and low amount of secondary guns but they are a pretty good choice.

The french BBs I'd probably not recommend to a newer player as their first BB line as they are not what you would call normal with their guns or consumables but they can be pretty fun.

You may want to look up some reviews from the community contributors as well, they have a ton of info on the different ships and could probably explain this stuff way better than I ever could.

TLDR: Russians and British BBs are pretty good but I would recommend US BBs for a newer battleship player.

I agree. The USN BBs sort of force you to learn to position properly and how to lead your target with their longer shell flight time.

King George V (Brit tier 7) Nagato ( Jap 7)  Amagi( Jap 8) Conqueror (Brit 10) Bayern ( German 6)

A lot of it has to do with personal preference. Do you like armoured brawlers, fast but weak armoured heavy gunned snipers, HE slinging zombie healing ninja damage farmers?

The British are the easiest BB line to play I think. Load HE, farm damage. The Japanese were the most fun I had. Most of their ships were pretty powerful for their tier, and I didnt really dislike any of them.

Both of these lines are relatively simple to learn, but they truly reward good map positioning and ammunition selection. A KGV firing only HE can get good damage numbers, a KGV that switches ammo based on the target can change the outcome of a game. Likewise for the Japanese. Its tough to fight an Amagi if the captain is flexible with their ammo choices. Angle to avoid AP damage and their HE will mess you up pretty good.

Bismarck overall is a disappointment from Gneisenau onward.

Russian bb for midrange and brawling.

Japanese or UK for long range.

German for bounces, shatters and useless secondaries.

The best tech tree BB is the Sinop followed closely by the Vlad at tier 8.

Four of the top seven are RU BB's. not including a rando tier 4 ship (orion)

Sinop, Izmail, Vlad and Kremlin take 4 of the top 7 tech tree BB spots.

Interestiing…..

I suggest the french line. The Tier 5 Bretaigne is strong but slow (and actually built) Tier 6 Normandie is fast and has 12 guns, T7 Lyon is fastish and has 16 guns of shotgunning fun, Richelieu at Tier 8 is an odd one, very fast, 2  quad turrets all facing forward (and actually built) and is either loved or loathed. T9 Alsace has been nerfed several times and is still the best tech tree tier 9 BB in the game and Republique can be either a long range sniper or a secondary ship depending on what you want and has 2 quad turrents fore and aft with BIG guns and a rapid reload.

Overall the French from T6 onwards are fast, hard to citadel but easy to farm with HE, favor smaller gun sizes but compensate with either more barrels or faster reloading.

My BB experience (after maxing DDs and cruisers):
IJN: Not my thing the sniper playstile and rather fragile build.
Germans: Was fun, but right now the higher ships are in a bad spot balance wise. I still like the troll build with 2nd and the Tirpitz in a T8 match.
So I started the Russian line: Holy hell, what a difference, felt WAY stronger than the other lines. Easier to survive, more and consistant dmg...

So: If you only have time and money for 1 line: Russia.

Tech tree BB's are balanced around this:

  • Germany - Close Quarter Combat
  • Russia - Mid/Close Combat
  • USA - Mid-Range Specialists
  • UK - Mid-Long Range
  • Japan - Long Range Specialists
  • France - Wildcards, but generally Mid-Long Range

And their "shtick" can be broken down like this:

  • Germany - Most forgiving armor profiles, but rotten awful artillery performance
  • Russia - You can't kill me bow on, and my artillery hits hard, too.
  • USA - Heavy broadside, but most American ships are boring and hard to play
  • UK - Best at Micro-Decision play because of effective AP and HE, but baddies only shoot HE
  • IJN - I can citadel you from any range because my artillery is so good, but I'm pretty squishy.
  • France - The true jack-of-all-trades battleship line

Russian battleships are probably the easiest to play because their "balance mechanics" are most reliable to players with a functional organ between their ears.  That is, their armor profile is the absolute best for bow tanking, and their turrets have twice the HP than everyone else.  They also have superb firing angles (yes, even Izmael), and their artillery has great penetration and accuracy at the ranges they're designed to play.  Additionally, their lack of range and and gradual dispersion curve keeps actually players in their most ideal and effective combat zone for players to achieve the best performance.  The only awkward battleship of the line is the Izmael, and even then, it's a really strong battleship once you figure it out.

If you're a good marksman, the Japanese line can be extremely rewarding as they have the best overall artillery performance.  I'm a pretty good marksman, so I did extremely well with this line, and it took me very few games to level through it.

German battleships can be great if you completely forgo the use of their secondaries.  This sucks because you personally want to make use of these, but doing so renders the battleship ineffective in the general combat range battleships are supposed to play at; the mid to mid/long range.  If you're willing to give up that secondary fantasy though, you may just fine that German battleships are waaaaaay better than people give them credit for.

Contrary to popular belief, USA battleships are not jack of all trades.  They're just balanced to the mid range.  They're designed around having a heavy broadside, a better heal, good agility, and decent AA, but these aren't attributes that players can truly capitalize on, and so because of that, US battleships are often just more difficult play.  People play them though because the ships are some of the most familiar and iconic in the world.  The Montana is great, though, but who wants to wait until T10 to have a decent ship?

The biggest problem with the USN Battleship line is that you can just save up coal and get the Georgia while grinding another line instead.

Bretagne with a secondary build:  provides 6.5 km secondary batteries and main guns that still compete well in the Tier-5 match-making.

Kongo.  She's fast and maneuvers decently for a BB.  Her guns can hit targets from beyond other BB's maximum range.  She's a versatile 'bote.  Armor can be squishy, so plan accordingly.

Gneisenau, because torpedo-ing a DD with a BB is such fun.  :-)

Much depends upon your criteria and play-style.
I tend to do risky things, like hunt DD's with a BB.
Things that work well in Co-op don't always translate well in Random battles.  Scenario Operations also offer interesting game-play opportunity.

You'll first notice that BB's don't turn like a white-water kayak.  Their rudder-shift times require a player to think ahead and read the situation and act accordingly.
BB's have a large detection radius.
BB's can tank damage that would sink four or more DD's.  But, it is still wise to maneuver to minimize incoming hits/damage.  Learn to properly angle the BB to make the most of its' armor.
Practice your gunnery.  With 30 seconds between re-loads, a lot can happen.  Learn the effective ranges and the ranges at which dispersion becomes a big enough factor to prevent hits on target.  Try to make each shot count.

Good luck, have fun, and try 'em all.  :-)

Tier for tier?

Toss up between Scharn and Sinop.

Overall?

Playstyles matter. 12km or less is 19 point secondary spec Tirpitz. 10km or more is Republic or Montana.

US has great battleships but most are premium or coal.  My favorites in order are Georgia, West Virginia, Massa, Monty, Arizona and NC.

As far as best tech tree ships Russian have the best line.  Start to finish they are good to fantastic.

I play BBs for most of my time in WOWS and my first BB line is German. I would say... Bismarck can be fun with your secondary artillery well upgraded. Bismarck is very hard to be citadelled and reloads guns faster. Make good use of these advantages, and you will like German BBs.

If you have 375000 Free Experiences, go for Nelson!

I personally like the Soviet BB line the most because of their fast reloading damage control party and OP guns.

Nelson is not a good ship. Its ok at its tier but sucks tiered up.   It can be citadel-ed from any angle and especially through the nose.  Save your free XP for something else.

Montana is easily my favorite tech tree ship and therefore my answer to this question. She's a great general purpose BB that might not be the best at any one thing, but there isn't anything that she's bad at either. IMO as far as BBs go, she's anywhere from "good" to "great" in every category.
