Amazingly she sunk herself in the process, as the torpedo she used was attached to a boom to the fore of the ship. All 5 crewmen died.

Five very brave men. I am surprised it didn't go straight to the bottom trying to carry all those big brass you know what's.

Isn't that the truth - I am hoping I get to see it in a museum before it gets burned down.

The crew was 8 and they likely died almost immediately after setting off the explosive charge that sank Housatonic from the blast concussion.  Water is incompressible so it hit the sub with full force and caused internal injuries to the whole crew who sat stunned and incapacitated at their stations while the sub sank.
