You got Submarines in the game at the moment but You are missing one the Submarines biggest missions in W.W.2 The sinking of ships carrying war supplies and replacements personel in the war effort. The convoy on both sides. This include Destroyer and Light Cruisers escorting safely the convoy Ships from port to port. This could be a dally mission for game players. The same could be escorting damage Merchant and Warships to repair bases against Submarines and surface ships hunting for them.

Indeed, unfortunately this falls into the realm of operations which seems not to be a priority right now.

There was a scenario,  escorting Richleu across the Atlantic,  hasn't been seen since before carrier rework.

I always enjoyed it and an Atlantic convoy scenario,  merchants escorted by DDs and corvettes would be fun.

The idea was tried (without subs) during alpha testing, and the same fundamental problem imho exists even today: the AI is stupid.

Remember all the PVE scenario missions where you have to escort this or that ship. Now think of it in a PVP match? Scripted pre-programmed AI for slow vulnerable convoys wouldn't be able to defend itself. It wouldn't know about things like angling to bounce shells, avoiding sub homing torpedoes, or countering stealth DDs. There's not much a player can do to save a convoy ship from a Shimakaze torp headed straight at them, other than to take the hit themselves. There's nothing they can do about shells hitting the convoys.

The way things turned out during alpha testing, the best way to defend a convoy was not actually to defend it at all. Going on the attack, killing and/or keeping all the enemies far away from your convoys, ensured the best chance your own convoys made it to the other side of the map, and that the enemy convoys didn't.

But at that point it was just a normal PVP match, and ended up defeating the whole purpose of 'defending' a convoy.

In the context of submarines it could work. There'll be no significant shell fire and bots are quite good avoiding torps when they are set to. A PvP convoy escort mission against a wolfpack looks viable.

That's actually a fairly historically accurate result.

Merchant ships were slow and sluggish to manoever. The best convoy protection always was to kill the subs/raiders before they got into firing range, after that you simply lost ships as once there were torps in the water ships were going to be sunk.

Close protection was about attrition (kill the sub now so that hull/crew couldn't attack another ship/convoy) rather than saving the attacked ship.

The Battle of the North Cape is a great example of this played out against a larger raiding force.

I think that when people mention the convoy escort idea, they have the Hollywood image of a tightly packed group of civilian merchant ships, surrounded by a ring of destroyers desperately trying to protect them from the U-boat wolfpack.

You are right that actively going out to fight the attackers before they got near the convoy was what ended up happening historically. But therein lay the gameplay issue that (at least during alpha testing) in a mode which was supposedly about 'defending the convoy', everyone did precisely the opposite, ignoring the convoys entirely and going on to fight what was all intents and purposes a standard battle. But instead of potentially capping the base, they potentially get to sink the convoy instead.

Exactly what Capt. Walker VC RN,  thought. And he used Frigates and Corvettes to do it.

Makes me wonder if WGing is thinking of adding them. Use them for Convoy OP's.

Might, a really big MIGHT, be able to use Frigates in normal play (awefully slow), Corvettes?, not a chance.
