Trying to figure out if this is worth it for my Cossack. 

I usually just pop smoke, come to a stop and fire from it. I want the  longest duration, not the longest emission time. The upgrade increases the duration by 30% but decreases the duration by 5%. Overall, does having an extra 30% mean that is will last longer even though  each puff is 5% less? 

Having trouble figuring out if the extra puff will actually make it last longer if all puffs are overlapping.

EDIT:  Smoke Gen Mod 1 increases the time your ship produces smoke.  You make more puffs.  It also reduces the time each puff remains.  You get more smoke that doesn't last as long.

i find it useless 

like it would only benefit Italian ship if they had not been Restricted from it

Cossack produces smoke for 10 sec, each cloud lasting 40 seconds (50 secs total), with the upgrade (+30% and -5%) that would be 13.3 seconds and 38 seconds (51.3 secs total). You'd get a bigger area of smoke but not really any more time.

This upgrade is really good on ships with crawling smoke (Haida and Perth).

not really worth it to give up the other slot 2 upgrades.
