If they can do it without effecting ping or FPS I am good with it.

If everything stays smooth regarding the ping and fps than yes.

I think the game won't be like Crysis 3 or a game like that :)

They could add this to WOT & WOWP too

Some games like battlefield 3 or ARMA 2 run well and their physical engine are impressive.

I know that a feature like that is not critical.

First the devs should create a good game and then they could add somme nice features...

Wargaming is big enough now to see larger :)

Weather played such a monumental role in so many naval engagements. Jutland, for example, might have been a complete slughter if not for the terrible visibility. It really should be in the game.

KGB has said that this feature will not be available on release. However, he did not specifically exclude it in the long run. Other priorities exist, and are consuming the time of the code-crunchers.

Night battles. At least. Rain would be good, too, or squalls moving across the map.

Impossible. A powerful thunderstorm with animated waves, thunder and lightning WILL affect fps, making the game unplayable for some people. Which is why I bet Wargaming will never put random weather in, because they want more people (i.e. more potential gold buyers) playing, not less because their GPU get's fried.

And how would it affect map balance? Fighting on maps X Y and Z on a calm sunny day wil be different than in thick fog and rough seas.

I can't see random weather happening ever.

They could add the weather in the futur. There is something good into game development: optimizations

Update afte update, the game should be faster. During that time, the computer hardware will improve. Then, random weather could be added :)

Thats why I said "if". Heck my ping spikes just sitting in a bush. I dont even want to think about what a fog bank would do.

I'd love to have random weather! And even weather can be relatively easy on your machine: just turn down the graphical effects a bit, make things a little darker/foggier (aka use darker colours and put a haze at the end of the max view distance) and you're more or less done. For people with more powerful machines you can add extra graphical effects which can be calculated locally.

So i think we should be fine when it comes to ping. It's just a matter of priority. :)

How many ship battles were fought in driving thunderstorms with heavy seas? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I think light rain, snow squals, fog, and night would all be doable. You could also do distant thunderstorm animations in the clouds on the horizon to simulate tropical weather, and not need to get any more involved than that.

I wouldn't look for or expect heavier stuff. But a bit of fog or rain effect isn't going to kill FPS. And if it is... seriously... get a job.

Hmm...get a job.

That comes across as a little insensitive PrincessRoyal given the state of the world economy. I know people who want one, but find that there are none available. But anyway that's a subject for another thread at another time.

As far as i know, devs said that waves don't/won't affect ships, so aside from visual interest and perhaps wind effects on shells and planes, there isn't much point. If you want, print a transparency with some waves on it and move it around from time to time on your screen. Night mode will be interesting, and visual range things like fog might add some tactics, but planes fly well over fog layers and can probably still spot you.

That's debatable -- it really depends on how thick the fog is. Also, the value of bad weather was demonstrated in WWII when the Japanese fleet hid in rough systems most of the way on their journey from Japan to Hawaii. Yes, ships should be able to duck into a fog bank and momentarily vanish, or slink away if they get out of range of searchlights at night. That's an integral part of war at sea, and while powerful radar has largely neutralized it as a tactical consideration, radar in this game should be relatively poor by modern standards. The unpredictability of naval combat is part of what makes it so interesting. Once we start trying to limit it because 'Phil' or 'Steve' can't buy/upgrade their computer more often than once a decade, we're doing ourselves a disservice.

Not to mention, fog isn't all that different than laying smoke, which may be supported in the near future as well.

I like the idea, the devil, as always, is in the implementation.

As to those with older machines.  I understand all too well cash flow issues that can get in the way of that.  Folks in that situation, however, should also realize that technology isn't frozen in time and should prepare for a day when the gaming world moves on to capabilities that their old hardware can't support.  It's the way life works.

I do hope there will be weather of some kind.

Wouldn't mind some fog.

Squally conditions that limit long range visibility.

Big waves that slow down small ships.

"Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get."

I like the idea a lot, but my main point comes back to this:  Almost any weather will involve particle effects (like fog or smoke).  These are some of the most brutal effects for computers to render (for some reason, I don't understand the details).  As a result, the visual load would only increase, and it seems like they may already be running the risk of their minimum requirements being too high for some of the older computers .  I would love to see it, but I can't really see how to implement it to avoid lag and graphics issues.

Maybe some maps will always have bad weather?

Aleutians and Bering Sea bad?

Bismark Sea good?

Hope that it will be random even in the same map
