^ Champagne is a fantasy battleship that combines a battlecruiser hull (not Gascogne hull) and Alsace Proposal No.2's triple 406mm (16 in) turrets.

^ 34 knots top speed seems consistent with the battlecruiser character.

^ 7km base range secondaries. This makes a secondary build viable, although the small caliber of 100mm would require IFHE.

^ 26 second main gun reload.

^ Center deck armor is the same as Alsace and Gascogne: 32mm. Vulnerable to HE spam.

^ 25mm bow and aft deck armor, vulnerable to overmatch. There is no ice-breaker bow.

^ 240mm citadel armor belt. In comparison, Gascogne's belt is 320mm; Richelieu and Jean Bart's belt is 330mm; Alsace's belt is 350mm; Republique's belt is 400mm.

But does it get reload booster?

According to Yuzorah, no. She only has damage con, repair, spotter/fighter, and engine boost. Source: https://thedailybounce.net/world-of-warships/supertest-french-tier-viii-premium-battleship-champagne/

My take:

I for one am not excited for Champagne. She is a fantasy ship using Alsace Proposal No.2's triple 406mm (16 inch) turrets. This is a sit-back-and-snipe glass cannon. I would rather have a premium Alsace-class (at Tier 9) that's actually based on Proposal No.2: with 350mm citadel broadside armor and 3x3 406mm (16 inch) guns. A proper battleship that balances armor and firepower.

You know, that 3x3 406mm Alsace design is actually the Bourgogne I wished we would have gotten, with all the same consumables.

I have always wished that the Super Alsace proposal would have become the Bourgogne. She is, like, the proper French Yamato:

What caught my attention with the Champagne is the gun performance.  She has superior long range penetration (>13km) than every other battleship in the game, even the 510mm armed Shikishima.  She also has rail guns for ballistics with blazing muzzle velocity retention.  She is not on battlecruiser dispersion tables, but these are serious, serious performing guns.

I could see us getting that, eventually.  If anything, this is a precursor to the Alsace No.2's release.

My guess is that Jean Bart has been a sales success to Wargarming, so they are now trying to make a Tier 8 "Jean Bart" and replicate that success. WG's logic might be that people like agile battlecruiser playstyle, so Jean Bart was successful.

Actually I think people just like OP ships.

Jean Bart is a sales success, but this is more of a Gascogne design. I don't think the Gascogne is a sales success lol.

Hey

I think the Gascogne is under rated for a T8 BB; I love mine and for quite a time had the most over 100K games in her above all others in my fleet, simply because many people thought she sucked.  It's a very good boat and I think of her like a big Graf Spee.  I played my first game in the Champ earlier today; only 65K damage but was top of the leader board with 3 kills, on a winning team so that was good.  I normally don't care much for 6 gun BB's but the shells are fairly accurate and the ship handles decently, good AA, and it can take some damage as long as you watch the angling, which goes for any boat.  I have not been uptiered yet; but with the long gun range (25km) and a spotter (30km) then you are out of range of many T10 ships.  She is also quite fast.

After playing against and with a bunch of these, I can say they're awful for the game.

Backline, 20km from anything, shooting across the map. No help at all, except they occasionally blat the poor sucker who isn't expecting that giving broadside to someone 25km way can get them triple citadeled.

Just like the Conqueror, this ship reinforces ALL the bad playstyle characteristics of the game. It rewards people who do nothing, but sit back and let their teammates die while spotting, safe in the corner of the map where they can literally reach 80% of everything.

It's beyond a doubt that WG folks never bother to play their own game, nor do they even watch others play it. There's a whole array of ships in the past 2 years that seemingly are specifically designed to make play miserable for the other 90%.
