Is this a 1/42 scale model kit available on the market? It didn't seem to be scratch built. As far as I know the largest off the shelf kits are 1/200

It's actually 1/200. 1/42 would be 20' long. Look up "Fujimi or Nichimo 1/200 Yamato" and you'll find pictures of it. It's not cheap, and certainly an endeavor.

I am familiar with the 1/200 Yamato kits. I don't want to knock the guy in the video but I've seen far better looking Yamato model builds. His looked rather rough close up. I follow many scale warship master modelers. Some are incredible.

Same here. I have a 1/350 Yamato I built, and some day I'll get to Japan and visit the Yamato museum in Kure, and check out the 1/10 scale model they have.

Here's a great warship modelling Facebook group for anyone interested. Some really amazing talent. Great inspiration as I'm preparing to get back into the hobby soon.

I built ships and its a good way to be like this. but every ship I built did not survive becuase of being a NASA Brat form my father the models got tossed and stolen, during moving. very sad story.

I was going to chime in about the 1:42 being clearly wrong, but others have it figured, I see.

I cannot refrain from asking whether others have ever seen what surely MUST be the finest ship model ever built, the 1/48th scale builder's model of RMS Titanic.

  • Its wooden display case (only) took two craftsmen two years to build.
  • commissioned by Harland and Wolff from Fine Art Models, it took seven years to build, completed in 2002
  • It is 18ft overall, and weighs 1500 pounds
  • It has 3.7 MILLION individual metal rivets applied by hand.
  • The deck furniture is real wood, and folds
  • it contains 8 MILES of fiber optic cabling for the lights

Do visit the link and check out the album.

I have the 1/200 scale that I bought 40 years ago.  Have not started it yet.  Time to quit playing WOWS and start to build it.  It cost $100 special price in 1985 from squadron mail order.  I have not seen it for many years.  Trumpeter has now released a 1/200 scale Titanic model with 1200 parts plus including a lighting kit.

Good gaming and model building folks.
