It's a paper ship, so ...  whatever WG says they are.

Edit:  Yes.  Those are weird.

Edit Edit:  Normandie has them too...  Yeah.  Another Paper ship

I believe they were to help if you lost a man overboard, you could release one that they might be able to use, or which would at least indicate direction of drift making it easier to find them.

Top tip from someone who works on boats, even if you can't throw a life ring or whatever to the person in the water, throw it near them, or over the side, easier to follow and track, and get that idea of where a person in the water would be drifting.

Top tip 2, do not throw life ring into the face of the casualty, chances of surviving in the water are seldom improved by having your teeth knocked out by a heavy plastic ring!

This is the Tourenne (T3).

The Richelieu also has the Lyon type square things, so it can be properly researched.

That is why we would have smoke floats on the bridge wings among other measures.  Of course that does next to nothing at night or heavy weather.

Channel markers for cleared minefields paths?  As your ship goes thru with paravanes deployed, you mark where you have been for the next ship?
