Based off of some concepts I had for a fast USN destroyer line, but adaptated to be more of a hybrid gunboat line. Consumables would probably be USN Smoke/Speed Boost/DFAA, no heal. Basic design is to have guns that deal more DPM than that of the long-range destroyers, but with somewhat weaker gun arcs, and unlike most gunboats long-range torpedoes that are balanced by having very long reload times.

Tier VIII – Fletcher Derivative 5”/54

Survivability

HP: 16,100

Actually lighter loaded than most of the Fletchers were. The General Board was pretty unsatisfied with the Gearing and Sumner classes seakeeping and top speed with the additional weighting they had taken on, and this design was to try and pull down the weight on the ship while adopting new armaments.

Around 2/3 the shells of the USN destroyers at the same tier, but don’t be deceived by the slow muzzle velocity, these shells are heavy with low drag giving them comparable performance to the VMF’s 130mm/50 gun or the light cruiser guns of most navies(if you can hit it with a 6”/47, you can hit it with these). The DPM is scaled to be comparable to that of the two primary gun destroyers at this tier(Le Fantasque and Kiev), though the arcs are weaker the ship is stronger in other ways.

Tier IX – Heavy Destroyer 1945

This was designed as an evolution of preceeding designs to gain speed relative to the existing Gearing/Sumner class destroyers while retaining most of their characteristics in terms of firepower and cruising range. The combination of traits resulted in an extremely large destroyer, even larger than the large destroyers of other nations, likely due to the huge cruising range and speed requirement(4500nmi at 20 knots).

Very close to the 90 rpm of the short-range gunboat destroyers, considerable pure DPM advantage over long-range gunboats. Downside is that the gun arcs are at more of a disadvantage versus the VMF 130mm/55 and French 138mm gun’s higher DPM at this tier.

Quite maneuverable for a large ship, not nearly as fast as the fast destroyers but still having a moderate advantage over the slower destroyers at this tier. Good concealment for a gunboat destroyer, not quite as good as the USSR hybrid but still compelling versus Mogador or Tashkent.

 

Tier X – Mitscher Scheme B

One of the earliest Mitshcer designs, similar hull profile but using the armament of a conventional destroyer and a larger 100,000 hp plant intended to make 40 knots even at full load. This was also one of the first ships to use the new automatic 5” gun mount.

Extremely agile for such a large fast ship, nod to the overall goal of retaining maneuverability. Similar place in terms of detectability as the predecessor ship, can’t win a spotting fight with any short-range gunboat but will beat the long-range gunboats excepting Grozovoi.

Interesting take. I have always been hopeful of the prospect of the Mitscher-class showing up in game someday. And of the idea of a DL branch for the USN DDs, especially since the Somers and Porter-class DLs are already in game.
