Invisibe DD's?

I've played this game since beta, but have been away from it for the last year or so.

Recently got back to playing and wondering WTH is going on with the invisible DD's? When I drive one of my BB's I don't see any ships close and suddenly torps are on me without any way to avoid them. I've got all Captains trained in "Torp Acquisition", yet I dont see any ship (even with recon plane flying) or torps until it's too late to do anything but die.

Used to be I could drive my BB's and avoid 75% of the fish shot at me. Now they pop up 100yds from my ship and I'm headed to Davy Jones Locker.

Did they change the game this much? Gotta say it's taken most of the fun out of driving BB's.

What tier are you playing in?  I will give you concealment distances of the dds that you might face.

Also, make sure that you travel with a good cruiser.  Us dd mains will target you if you're alone, but we will reposition if you have a cruiser escort

For one thing, planes no longer spot torps.

Oh boomer... I was suspecting that... Ty for the confirmation (also back after long time)

I think what he needs is adquisition distance of torps.

For BB's I usually play anywhere from Tier 4 thru 8 but my last game was in a Fuso. I was on the side of the map with no enemy visible, no smoke showing, recon plane up and I had two sets of torps pop up about 100 yds. Yeah, I realize the Fuso (and pretty much every BB) is a bear to turn but WOW!

Ahhh good to know as the last few times have been without escort, either everyone else killed off, or me trying to get in a position to provide fire support.... without escorts. Guess I'lll be sticking closer to the Cruisers from now on.

Yeah, I've already trained all my Captains in Torp Acquisition. Guess they dropped the distance for torp acquisition.

Biggest defense against torps is to make sure you don't sail at the same course and speed for very long when spotted.  You pretty much have to already be dodging the torpedoes before you spot them to have a chance.

Asashio is basically a Sub in the right hands and BB is its dinner.... Also Pans Deep water torps are another possibility and planes are not Tattoo's friend anymore.

Well that explains it... Look OP, the game has a %5 torp hit rate at the Fuso tier... After tier 7 and higher, it drops by %50 thanks to the generous detection and spotting tools given to BB and Cruisers...

Now to mention BB at high tiers move like PT boats in avoiding torps... Mid tiers from 4 to 6, I recommend you stay close to a cruiser (team play you know).

Once you're high tier, BBs have minimal threats to worry about...Nothing to what I mentioned above concerning mid tiers, has changed since beta (heavy IJN Torp nerf of 2017)..

High tiers, your in BB glory... Nothing but guns and planes to sink you... Torps just disappear thanks to the OP/over capable abilities of the BB/Cruiser/CVs

I was in a tier 2 match last week with my Tachibana,  5 km torps 4.7 km detection range. There was a BB in the open coming towards me, at an angle but parallelcourse. I could stay in front of him out of detection and fire my torps back and he would move into the torps range. The Tachibana can launch 4 torps about every 30 seconds.

The new torpedo vigilance skill is supposed to let you see all torps at 1.8km. The Asashio's torps normally are detected at 0.8km.

I know DD players wish they had that low detection for their torps.:Smile_popcorn:

I suspect what happened  to OP is he was using some island cover, but that allowed a DD to approach well inside normal detection to point blank range.  A common tactic among DD mains.  Hydro or radar is a hard counter to this.  All depends on my hp level, I won't consider doing if their are 2+ escorts, and/or one has hydro.  If only one and it does have hydro, I might try to tiptoe into hydro range to check if it's on.

The best way guard against this is to use your minimap and try to keep track of where DDs were last seen and when.

This is pretty good, and spot on.   Especially if you are in a BB and have an Asashio and Kagero after you.  They can end you easily if you are predictable.

As others have said, have a cruiser or DD in front if you to keep then honest.

When I'm in a DD I still make the mistake with the Russian radar.  That extra 2k of range makes a big difference.  Damn moskavas hiding behind islands.

Keep track of how many destroyers the other team still has in play, and which destroyers they are.  Some destroyers cannot torp you from concealment while others can, so it helps to know how destroyers are played.

If the on-screen warning that you are detected pops up but you don't see any ships, you may be getting stalked by a destroyer.  Start looking at your mini map to see where a hunting destroyer may have come from.

There is a setting to see the last known position of enemy ships on your minimap.  You should have that enabled.  That will let you know where any remaining destroyers were last seen.

Pay close attention to your mini map!  It provides you with key information you need for proper positioning, planning your offense, and planning your defense.  You need to watch it frequently throughout the game.

Good luck, commander!

When I'm in a DD I still make the mistake with the Russian radar.  That extra 2k of range makes a big difference.  Damn moskavas hiding behind islands.

I remember when I was new in 2015, back before IJN DDs started eating nerfs, this one particular game.  I was already dead and was watching this Tier VIII Fubuki player on my team who already racked like 3 kills.  It was real late in the game.  He spotted an enemy BB at range and fired all 3 torpedo launchers.  The range was about 10km or so.

Personally I felt the range was too long that time.  The range was so long, took even longer for the torps to arrive, that I actually asked the Fubuki player in team chat if that was a wise torp drop.  Long range drops tend to have very low hit %, I thought.

He felt the drop was a sound attack to make, just watch and see what happens.

Sure enough, the BB just kept on going its same max speed.  No course changes, nothing.  You can see the moment the BB player spotted the torps and got the warning sounds, and he ate a ton of torps, dying.

He said post-match that the reason he felt very confident in the long range drop was that the BB was in a hurry to get somewhere, the fight further south and help his people.  Basically, he needed to go from Point A to Point B, and he hit the "W" key 4x and went fast to get to the fight as soon as he can.  That only set him up for an intercepting DD.

The Fubuki player was also aided by the fact that the BB player, because it wasn't fighting, shooting at anyone at that point in time, got lax with his situation awareness... He didn't spot any potential threats nearby, but he didn't notice he was detected, either :Smile_teethhappy:

There's little clues that you notice that means you are being set up for a torpedo attack.  The most obvious is being alone but somehow still detected despite no ship in your ship's detection range.  Another clue is seeing Priority Target go from "1" to "0" and then back to "1" again.  However, some DD players know a workaround against Priority Target.  It's a really funny system that goes back and forth :Smile_coin:

Or, you could quit playing the victim and actually try to understand what you did wrong to get sunk.

I know..."WHOA, WHOA!!!  No way did anything wrong!!!"
