When in doubt shoot the closest ship, or shoot the most vulnerable ship.

Shoot to kill not wound.. a wounded ship is still dangerous HE mostly only wounds.. and at high teir recoverable wounds.   A ship with 1 HP left is still more often than not fully combat capable and fully capable of killing other ships.  Do not look to pad your damage out put and your PR at the expense of victory.  Please.  Your not the only person on the team.

Your teams DD's cannot do their DD job if they are spotted.  You want them doing their DD job.  Air spotting is not something most players are going to effect, but the DD getting radared you can.  Always, always, always make life hot for RADAR ships.   Long range hydro packing ships are next on the list.   These ships kill DD's.  And DD's serve another purpose beside delivering surprise alpha damage.  They can spot targets you might not otherwise see.  They can distract and discomfit the opposing ship just with torpedo fear factor for those DD's with reasonable topedo's.  They can lay smoke for you to travel in or to screen you from opposing fire.  very multi purpose ships so try to keep them alive unless of course they are on the other team in which case the sooner you can kill them the better.   CV are best at killing DD's.  Rocket armed fighters are nearly impossible to dodge for DD's.. and the higher the tier of DD the more difficult it is.

Your teams cruisers cannot do their job if they are constantly under harassment.  Cruisers must take risks... they just cannot keep taking risks.

Your Teams BB's can only fire their guns about once every 25 to 32 seconds.  There are exceptions and outliers but basically BB's are 2 round per minute per gun.

BB guns hit hard... if they hit.  They only hit if they get fired.  If your a BB driver and your guns haven't been fired in the last 60 seconds your likely doing something wrong.  If you've taken no damage during those 60 seconds.. your doing something VERY wrong.  BB's are for taking damage and keeping going.   That's why they are called battleships.   BB's have armor and heals.. use your ship.  Use all of it.  don't hang back.  The cruisers need you forwards.. the DD's also need you forward where your big guns can utterly ruin a radar ships day.  or any other cruiser.. or DD if you can manage to smack it about.   . If you up forward have a choice.  Shoot at the DD, or shoot at the cruisers leave the BB's till last.  Why?  They're as tough as you are.  If your going to get in a slugging match with another BB you need to clear the riff raff off!  SP get up there and distract the cruisers.   The smarts ones will shoot at the DD's.   Most of them aren't very smart.  They'll shoot you.  All you have to do is survive it and BB's are the GO TO ship type in the game for that.

Teams that push up together either win or give the other team one helleva fight.  And that only happens if the other team also moves up.   Teams that run, that play shy, almost universally end up out smarting themselves..... and not winning.   Yea it's not true all the time but it is true way more then 50% of the time.  and if you look at the number of blow outs that happen I'd venture to say it's more like 75% or greater just off hand.   It can be inferred from existing data, but that data would need to be collected differently than it currently is, and some of it would require physical observation to back it up.  Kind of a shame really.  I'd love to stuff folks noses into the facts myself.

SO.. most important is shooting... and hitting a target.  Next most important is what the target is and why you are shooting at that specific target.     This is not rocket science (which by the way is actually pretty simple.  Orbital mechanics not so simple.. but the rockets.. very simple) .

Don't just shoot.  Shoot at what is in the way of your team achieving victory.  Don't just NOT shoot because you don't have a perfect target.  Any damage beats no damage every single time.   There are times to not shoot, but most players get that wrong.     You want to cause.. unhealable damage where possible.   And damage adds up.    In this kind of game there is a principle called "Combat Loss Grouping" which is fairly simple.  Over time accumulated damage will reduce a ship to a state of high vulnerability to out right loss.    The effect is real.   It's part and parcel of what makes HE and fires so irritating BTW as fire damage can rapidly reduce your ability to survive CLG effects.  You see it all the time in matches where ships off on one flank suddenly all die with in a minute or two.  One dies allowing the shooters to concentrate fire on the remaining ships and as each ship dies the focus on the other remaining ships increase taking them out one by one in very short order..  This is in my mind the primary cause of blow outs..  It's not the ships.. it's not the game system.  It's the players  that just don't understand and see what is happening.   The other problem is fear.  Consider how little actual inter player communication happens and you realize this is not by plan.  This is by accident and coincidence!    So how do you avoid it?      Honestly I don't know other that staying aware, paying attention to the minimap and paying attention to whats right there in front of you.  Because the only other real solution is to not take any risks  and that is a problem that also cause blow out games.   The players who don''t take risks tend to find that half their team is dead.. they're at full HP and outnumbered close to or better that 2:1.  This is NOT world of tanks..  if that happens your in the deep stuff and it's about to get worse.

If you don't take risks AS A TEAM you cannot win.  Your job as a player in noit just shooting, it is managing risk.   Take risks, take chances, get in there and do the job.   If you wait you pass the advantage to the opposition.  Matches are 20 minutes maximum.   it really amazingly stupidly easy to wait to long to be part of the fight.   This is rarely going to be sufficient time to recover from early setback in the match.  So if your going to suffer a set back try to ensure the other team does too.

This is not a naval combat simulator... this is more like a game of Blood Bowl.    Anyone can be a ball carrier and no one really wants to be the ball carrier because that means everyone is trying to hurt YOU.  Point of fact, their trying to actually kill you.   Of course in this game if you force someone out of bounds they're just slowed down..  In blood bowl if you force a player out of bounds they get set upon by the "fans and spectators" and generally get ya.. know... killed.

Go play some blood bowl.. maybe you'll get it!
