52,856 [MAUS] LittleWhiteMouse Members 13,835 posts Report post #1 Posted February 7, 2020 (edited) UPDATE IN PROGRESS Here is a list of every reward and premium ship presently in the game and a review (if applicable). This represents and archive spanning 8 years. Some of these articles are broken -- either by formatting changes made by the updates to these message boards over the years, broken graphic links or simply holding out of date information. If you have questions, please reply in this thread and make sure you include an @LittleWhiteMouse so I get flagged, otherwise I will miss your message. I've included a very quick summary and an "Angry YouTuber" evaluation of it's current power level in the meta. Please be aware of the date of the last time this post has been updated in order to know if the information is current. Angry YouTuber Review For those who absolutely must have a shorthand on ship performance, I present this mockery of a system: GARBAGE– I hate it! Maybe it sucks. Maybe it's boring. Maybe I resent how it was implemented in the game. You won't know unless you read the full review, but this is quotable, gosh darn it.MEHBOTE – It's alright. Frankly, this describes almost every ship in the game. People get really cheesed when I describe their favourite, super-competitive ship as meh, so I do it often.GUDBOTE – The best thing ever. These are ships I like to play. Maybe it's good. Maybe it's fun. Maybe I'm trolling you. You dunno, but you'll make a big deal that I said X was a good ship when you preferred Y. OVERPOWERED – I hate playing against it. Note that these evaluations listed here may differ from those found in the article. Why? Well, a couple of reasons. Quick Summary entries are more recent and are more likely to reflect my present feelings on the ship. It's easier to change one word here than going back, making a new graphic (or animation) after all. Sometimes I just like messing with people. Seriously, one-word blurbs to summarize the complexity and nuance of a ship is downright silly. I spend literal weeks getting to know these ships. I die a little on the inside having to condense all of that information down to a single, quotable blurb. I've also included a brief explanation of why it received the evaluation it did. Tier II Tachibana & Tachibana Lima Quick Summary: A very small destroyer with a tiny hit point pool and a small, fast-reloading torpedo armament. They are a short ranged, but that doesn't matter because she's sneaky as all get out. Tachibana Lima has the red palette swap. GARBAGE This is a bad product, not due to any failings of the ship, but because very low-tier Random Battles are a neglected mess. With no incentives for established players to venture to very low tiers, it is overwhelmingly populated by Wargaming's bots to make up the numbers. Keep away. Tier II Smith Quick Summary: A tiny, slow and under-armed destroyer with 76mm main armament guns and with fast-reloading, single-tube launched torpedoes. GARBAGE This is a bad product, not due to any failings of the ship, but because very low-tier Random Battles are a neglected mess. With no incentives for established players to venture to very low tiers, it is overwhelmingly populated by Wargaming's bots to make up the numbers. Keep away. Tier III Campbeltown, Quick Summary: A Town-class Destroyer with 7.5km range torpedoes and a broadside of only 2 guns. Despite it's American appearance, she plays more like a mid-tier Japanese torpedo-destroyer. GARBAGE Another casualty of the low populations at the starter tiers. Campbeltown's poorly equipped to deal with suicide-rushing bots. Against human opponents? She's much better, where she can play keep away and launch hit and run strikes. Still, I wouldn't pull the trigger on this one. Tier III Vampire Quick Summary: A lightly-armed gunship destroyer with a single triple torpedo launcher. She's one of the better low-tier destroyer hunters in the game. MEHBOTE I want to like this one, I really do. But see above with Smith and Tachibana. Low tiers are neglected and I can't guarantee that you get human opponents to play against which is where Vampire really shines. So it's probably best to avoid this ship. Tier V Fujin, Kamikaze & Kamikaze R THESE SHIPS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE OUTSIDE OF SUPERCONTAINERS AND SIMILAR RNG-BASED ACQUISITION METHODS. Quick Summary: Kamikaze (green), Fujin (orange shark face) and Kamikaze R (blue swoosh) are old-school, pre-nerf mid-tier Japanese destroyers with fantastic torpedoes, good speed, excellent camouflage and slow firing, short-ranged guns. OVERPOWERED Minekaze was nerfed repeatedly over 2015 for being too awesome (it wasn't even fair playing against her). These three sisters preserve that unfairness from yesteryear. If I see any of these three ships on the enemy roster, alarm bells ring. They are that busted. If I'm in a DD hunter, such as Haida or Ark Royal or Atlanta I am gunning for these ships with reckless aggression (you'll note all three are higher tiers -- yeah, I need that much power to contend with these brats). Tier V Hill Quick Summary: A typical mid-tier American destroyer with good guns, great agility but crappy torpedoes and horrible stealth. MEHBOTE It's very comparable to Nicholas, the tier V American tech tree destroyer. She has more guns (but slower firing) and fewer torpedoes. She trades hit points and stealth for extra agility and some better anti-aircraft numbers. Stealth is the lifeblood of destroyers and Hill is severely limited by her terrible concealment. Tier V Gremyashchy THIS SHIP IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE OUTSIDE OF SUPERCONTAINERS AND SIMILAR RNG-BASED ACQUISITION METHODS. Quick Summary: A Gnevny-class destroyer (you'll see a lot of these in this game) with excellent, powerful guns, great torpedoes, a high top speed but bad concealment and TERRIBLE gun handling. OVERPOWERED Gremyashchy is a product of her time -- that time being Closed Beta, back in the Spring of 2015. When she was released she was only 'okay'. Then Nicholas and Minekaze were nerfed into the ground, the former by blanket system changes to how AP shells and Smoke Generator consumables worked and the latter through repeated, targeted reductions to the power of her torpedoes. Gremyashchy maintains that old-school power level, comparable to a tier VI or VII destroyer today but still sitting at tier V. Like the Kamikaze-sisters, I cringe when I see one of these on the enemy team. Tier V Okhotnik Quick Summary: What happens when you design a destroyer and opt to ignore physics? You get the Okhotnik -- a destroyer with SEVEN guns and TWELVE torpedo tubes! She looks as ridiculous as she plays with horrible agility, suicidally short-ranged torpedoes and no anti-submarine armament whatsoever. MEHBOTE Look, this thing is hilarious and offers some very fun game play. I wouldn't say she's good, but she is memorable. Tier V Siroco Quick Summary: A fairly average mid-tier French destroyer with early-access to the Main Battery Reload Booster consumable, giving her frightening levels of burst damage. MEHBOTE Siroco can put out a lot of shells very quickly with her Main Battery Reload Booster, but her ballistics are a bit of a let-down, lacking the muzzle velocity or energy retention to make them comfortable outside of close ranges. She makes up for this somewhat with torpedoes she can stealth-fire. Note that like many French destroyers, she lacks smoke, so she can't escape easily if she gets detected. Tier VI Shinonome & Shinonome B Quick Summary: An old-school Fubuki-class destroyer with six, slow firing guns instead of four and 8km ranged torpedoes. GUDBOTE Shinonome is a workhorse torpedo-boat, a nice combination of good enough concealment, good enough torpedoes, good enough agility and surprisingly punchy guns. Now these guns are not your main weapon -- not by a long shot, but they hit VERY hard with her HE and she has a lot of them, so a salvo or two can do some surprising work on exposed targets. You really need to be at the top of your torpedo-DD game to get the most out of her, but she's worth putting in the effort. Tier VI Monaghan Quick Summary: An AA-specialized Farragut that has the option for being outfitted as a gunship or torpedo-specialist with two distinct hulls -- it's like two premiums in one, which is pretty cool. There's a couple of ships like this in the game, though some do it better than others (foreshadowing!) MEHBOTE Monaghan doesn't do either role she's designed for particularly well, being worse than Farragut in her gunship spec and not a particularly good torpedo destroyer when she's in the other version of herself. This latter build suffers from sacrificing too much to get her long range but slow-moving torpedoes. Oh, her AA sucks, btw. Big surprise in the current meta, I know. She also uses cruiser depth charges for some reason. Tier VI T-61 THIS SHIP IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE OUTSIDE OF SUPERCONTAINERS AND SIMILAR RNG-BASED ACQUISITION METHODS. Quick Summary: A German torpedo-boat that lives up to its name. It has a dangerously quick-reloading torpedo armament along with German-destroyer quirks, like access to Hydroacoustic Search and high-damage AP shells. OVERPOWERED T-61 is another one of those problem ships that's been pulled from the shelves. In her case, it's owing to her ability to launch torpedoes from stealth very, very quickly. The reload of her two quadruple-tube torpedo launchers is only 68 seconds. Pair this with a not-terrible (though not good) main battery. decent stealth and access to a Hydroacoustic Search consumable and you can begin to see why she became a problem child. Tier VI Karl von Schönberg Quick Summary: A modified version of the tier VI tech tree destroyer Gaede while using 150mm guns. Von Schönberg has improved guns (longer ranged, slightly faster rate of fire) and access to a Repair Party consumable at the expense of worse torpedoes and the loss of hydro and smoke. MEHBOTE The trade off isn't worth it. It's close -- the ship isn't terrible, but she lacks the flexibility of her tech-tree counterpart, going instead being designed to trade fire and survive. Tier VI Anshan Quick Summary: Yet another Gnevny-class destroyer with two different torpedo options. As she predates the launch of the Pan Asian destroyer line, she does not have access to Deepwater torpedoes. MEHBOTE Anshan's alright! She borrows a lot from Gremyashchy, though downplayed in a lot of ways (lower fire chance per shell, longer reload on torpedoes, less concealment, etc). enough to make her fit comfortably at tier VI without being overpowering. Tier VI Gallant Quick Summary: British destroyer stripped of most of the usual gimmicks of the tech-tree line (so no super acceleration, no UFO turning ability, standard Smoke Generator instead of a short-burst version and she gets access to an Engine Boost). MEHBOTE Gallant feels like Icarus but stripped of all of her gimmicks and forced to play with the same rules as a Japanese or Soviet destroyer. It's not terrible, but it's not good. Note she was released long before the actual British destroyer tech tree came out, so that explains this weirdness. Imagine that -- being normal is 'weird'. Tier VI Aigle Quick Summary: A fast, fat, fumigating, fish-slinging fury. Aigle is huge with the hit points to match. Her weapons are powerful but cumbersome and she's visible from space. MEHBOTE Aigle gets this rating because it's an uphill struggle to get her weapons to work. Her guns have bad traverse speed, firing angles and ballistics despite their power. Her torpedoes hit like absolute trucks (over 18,000 damage each!), but they're almost impossible to launch from stealth, meaning you're giving yourself away anytime you try and use them. Not only are your opponents likely to dodge if you're doing this from range, but you'll probably lose some hit points too. Tier VI Leone Quick Summary: A gunship with a slow-firing battery of eight guns and a small armament of slow, but quick-reloading torpedoes that have good range. MEHBOTE Leone has a huge main armament but the guns suck. Instead, think of her as a torpedo boat. Your torpedoes reload quickly. They have a good range of 12km. But they're slow and they don't hit particularly hard. Oh, and you only launch four at a time. Yeeeeeah. She's not very good. Tier VI Juruá Quick Summary: A clone of Gallant, the tier VI British premium destroyer. She has four 120mm guns with a 5 second reload and two quadruple torpedo launchers that can single fire her torpedoes. Pair this with a standard Engine Boost and Smoke Generator. She's nothing fancy and a bit of a workhorse. MEHBOTE Akin to the British tech tree destroyer Icarus but stripped of the gimmicks of the British tech-tree line. Juruá feels very "normal", almost plain were it not for her single-fire torpedoes which is her sole stand-out feature. She's a safe premium but uninspired. Tier VII Yudachi Quick Summary: A modified Shiratsuyu-class destroyer with slower firing guns. Her torpedoes have a 15km range but provide opponents with over TWELVE SECONDS of reaction time. GARBAGE Meet the California of destroyers. Yudachi offers nothing of value. Tier VII Sims & Sims B Quick Summary: One of the most agile ships in the game with four, quick-firing 127mm/38 guns, access to the Defensive AA Fire consumable and two different (but crappy) torpedo options. MEHBOTE Sims is alright. She's changed a lot over the years. Her agility is phenomenal and her gun handling is amazing. Where she hurts is hitting power. She has the choice between 7km torpedoes that you'll struggle to fire from stealth or long range ones that crawl towards the opponent at a mere 49 knots and tickle the opponent with their anemic warheads. She's also shackled with cruiser depth charges that don't hit as hard as the usual destroyer ones. Tier VII Leningrad Quick Summary: A fast gunship with poor gun-handling but backed by a decent torpedo armament. MEHBOTE Leningrad a decent ship at this tier. Her Soviet 130mm guns can do work with both HE and AP. But their five second reload starts to feel a bit slow at this tier when only five guns are shooting. Still, she's hella quick, able to reach 43 knots right out of the box before boosters, so that's amazing. Her torpedoes aren't the best, but they can be stealth fired which makes her excellent for harrying the flanks. She'd have to have better guns, torpedoes or be a bit more stealthy to break out of the commons, though. Tier VII Tashkent '39 [ ENTRY COMING SOON ] Tier VII Z-39 Quick Summary: An under-armed tier VIII destroyer crammed in at tier VII but it kept it's tier VIII bonuses. MEHBOTE Z-39 is weird, yo. She was originally intended to be a tier VIII ship but during testing, she just didn't work there. So Wargaming downtiered her to VII and let her keep traits like her improved hull plating and access to the 5th upgrade slot. Those ended up being her gimmicks along with the usual German stuff of 150mm guns, a huge hit point pool and access to Hydroacoustic Search. Tier VII Blyskawica Quick Summary: A large gunship with seven 120mm mounts and a decent, but not great torpedo armament. She has poor concealment. GARBAGE This is a case where the rating comes from how she's implemented in the game rather than her own performance. Blyskawica has been done dirty by Wargaming. She was an excellent ship when first released but she's been power-crept out of relevance and Wargaming refuses to do anything about it. For example, she used to have a large hit point pool for a tier VII destroyer. Her 15,500 hp used to be big, but that was before the addition of the German, French, Pan European lines and the Commonwealth premiums. She needs some love. Tier VII FR25 [ ENTRY COMING SOON ] Tier VII Haida THIS SHIP IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE OUTSIDE OF SUPERCONTAINERS AND SIMILAR RNG-BASED ACQUISITION METHODS. Quick Summary: An incredibly stealthy Tribal-class destroyer with a Crawling Smoke Generator. She also has a weird, short-ranged but very long-duration Hydroacoustic Search. OVERPOWERED Haida is one of the best destroyer-hunters in the game. She is overspecialized for sniffing out and engaging enemy destroyers at very close ranges, which has the spillover effect of making her great at contesting caps. She fares reasonably well against submarines but she struggles against cruisers and battleships while sharing the usual destroyer weakness versus carriers. Still, killing enemy destroyers and securing cap circles early is one of the surest ways to influence the outcome of a battle and Haida is perfectly designed to do this. Tier VII Huron Quick Summary: A Tribal-class destroyer with high main battery DPM, improved ballistics but poor concealment and nerfed HE performance. She trades access to a Smoke Generator for a Repair Party. She also has access to a short-ranged Hydroacoustic Search. GARBAGE This evaluation has nothing to do with her performance but everything to do with how she was implemented. I hate that Wargaming didn't give her historical 120mm/45 Mk IX guns. Like San Diego and West Virginia '44, the performance of Huron's guns is conjured up from the land of make-believe. Wargaming wanted Huron to be a long-range bombardment ship but "normal" 120mm/45 guns have horrible ballistics which wouldn't allow for that. Their solution? Fudge her ballistics so that her shells had a (much) flatter trajectory than any other 120mm/45! Edited July 18 by LittleWhiteMouse 126 2 18
