As someone who works maintenance for a living, it often takes longer to figure out what's wrong than it does to make the repair. For instance, I repaired a buildings air conditioning today. Took about 2 minutes to make the actual repair, and 2 hours to find the problem (a broken wire hidden under the insulation). For those 2 hours I had to keep telling the boss that I didn't know how long it would take, because I wouldn't know until the problem was found.
