So there I was in my Izmail, witness to the Shchors burning down in my immediate vicinity... but it was SO CLOSE that I couldn't turn my ship around to get inside the circle to pick up the captain, and after some truly clumsy manoeuvring, I realised with horror that I had let the task get away from me.

With the timer ticking down toward the last few seconds, along came the hero of the hour to charge into the circle and redeem the situation.

It was one of the transport ships from the convoy, sailing on its pre-ordained course that just happened to put it in the right place at exactly the right time.

@Lightninger, I don't know if you've ever seen this happen. It was the craziest fluke, but luck was on our side. Sadly we could not kill the last BB in time, but it was still a four-star win with a pubbie group.

I've witnessed it a couple of times before. It is exceedingly rare though. The Shchors has to love just long enough to get tangled up inside the transport group, but also be low enough that one of the escorts can burn it down with a fire. And the ship has to sink in the path of one of the transports.

I was in the same situation in Fuso, but there was no way to turn back into the circle.  There was a Graf behind me, and I asked in chat if he could rescue Shchors.  Nope, he did not respond to the chat and took the same line behind me, just missing the circle by less then 1KM.  Unfortunately for the team, no transports helped either.  :Smile_amazed:

But we all played the Op for the first time, did we not.  LOL!

Missing the circle or just not having anyone near it.....a lot of the time.   A transport ship.........never have I seen that and the RNG GoD and the Schwartz was with you !

With RNGesus at the helm. Shades of the little ships coming in for the rescue in the Dunkirk movie.

The group has done Aegis more times than I care to try and count and there has been a number of times where a transport has picked up the Shchors captain. It actually happened once last night as well. We also did something on Aegis last night that I am not going to state here. Ask if you want to know.

In late-night Narai runs with Hoperations, I think I've seen a transport kill steal on the Missouri at least twice. :cap_haloween:

Did it have to do with, uh, battleships at all. I think I was there for that one.

Nope, nothing to do with the Extra Battleships, though the replays for that are this week.

I learned something else tonight. As you know if you've played Aegis, once the first transport gets its nose across the line and registers operation complete, the battle goes on for a few seconds - and I witnessed two of the transports dying in the time between the operation-complete announcement and the battle actually closing down. We did not lose a star.

Also, the Ark Royal is a lot of fun in this scenario.

Sometimes this is a real life saver, too. I've had several Aegis runs where we get the kill on Kousotsu after the transports actually leave. Like, shells are in the air when the transports leave and you're all "OH NOES FOUR STARS" but then whaaaaaaaaam THREE CITADELS AND FIVE STARS. :cap_horn:

From both of your posts,  sounds like you are someone who doesn't play Aegis way too much.   :cap_haloween:   They aren't rare, more so uncommon occurrences.  The rescue thing by transports has prob happened a dozen times this year so far.  And half the time we didn't need em to,  and the other half they saved our star.

From a PUG standpoint,  another helpful tip is to tank and distract when the convoy is almost to the evac point(every ship type,  I'm looking at you CVs).  Should be common knowledge but it isn't.  I think from the 20+ games this week with an ally CV,  none of them helped take the heat off the convoys.      When they convoy is freed,  the CV should be moving toward the evac and stay NORTH/above the convoy.   Still keep yourself concealed until you see the imminent threat coming to the transports.  The transports have a detection of about 10km it seems.  If you see that a transport is 11-13km from an enemy ship.  You should make yourself known to the reds by sticking your nose into their business(AKA charge!).   You might save a star and sometimes even prevent a failed mission.

(I often see CVs lurk at the bottom right or even left quadrant of the map.  CV offense is already slow, and now they aren't even helping with the convoy defense with their full HP.)  This is the only route I use with my CV.  Below - picture  +also need to adapt to stay out of the convoy's path.

Spoiler

This is a tip you shouldn't need unless the team is super terrible.  It is very, very situational because it requires a smoke capable ship.  If your team implodes and there's 1-3 of you left after freeing the convoy,  that smoke ship needs to stop fighting completely and start escorting and staying ahead of the convoy.  Because at minimum,  it looks like 3ships NE + FUSO and then the 2 BBS NW.  1vs6 isnt a fight you should take,  you need to smoke the convoy through to the end(this will take a few attempts to get the location and timing right).

I've single-handedly salvaged 2 wins this week.  And also had a few games where teammates understood what I meant when I instructed them to smoke the convoy through and some did it on their own.  (playing Aegis in the first half of the year,  ignored 100% of the time)

This is really good that the general player base is learning some tactics for Aegis.   I think on an avg week rotation of Aegis,  there is a 25% fail rate in pugs.  This week only 1 loss in 35+ games.

Wow, I was genuinely surprised when I looked at your pic and it's exactly the path I always take with my CVs. When I'm not a CV I find other CV players rarely do this. I tend to keep mum about it unless they're doing something really awful, like trying to attack from the opposite edges of the map. Then I just suggest their sortie rate would be higher if they got closer with minimum risk.

In Aegis, a good clue that your CV pilot is decent is that they end up in the middle of the scoreboard or above in a win. If they're at the bottom, one of two things has happened: Either the team is a fierce band of top skill locusts who tore through the bots before the CV could run enough sorties or the CV captain is really unskilled at CV. If a CV is alone at the top of the scoreboard in a defeat and everyone else is dead, the team imploded and the CV just farmed damage until the transports were destroyed.

If anything, it was _NOT_ like Congress. We actually got work done working together.

Hmm how do you feel about delaying planes for 30-40secs at the start?   I've noticed 1 in 5 matches where CV players will do that.

I always do it,  but there's no benefit if the dds & cruisers aren't aggressive and know how to take advantage.  It is a strictly team-play action as the CV delays an early strike to give 3-6 teammates a potentially stronger attacking position.

I always do it. I time it based on the voice conversation between the Shchors and the Mahan. Just before the Mahan says "prepare for action" or something to that effect I launch Ark Royal's attack planes. For Ryujo, right afterward is fine. The goal is to spot the ships the same time Mahan does. I approach from behind the island to avoid detection and unnecessary AA fire.

That way, the Mahan smokes up as late as possible (as you no doubt know it smokes the instant the vanguard is detected by anyone), letting DDs and cruisers get as close as possible while staying concealed. You know you have this right if the Mahan shoots the instant it starts smoking.

You're correct, I think, in suggesting that this is strictly a team-oriented tactic. But having played this Op hundreds of times I like to give pickup groups every possible advantage, because heaven knows many of them need it.
