That we recognize that ship means we're both showing our age...

Grew up watching that show.

Most kids wanted to be an astronaut, I wanted to be a Undersea Explorer and diver.

Didn't happen....

Well, I at least managed to build the Revell plastic model of the ship. Probably one of the first kits I ever built.

Now, who is this Calypso person again?

You know that you are getting old... when you remember Roger Whittaker without grey hair:Smile_veryhappy:

I saw him live in concert when he still didn't have grey hair. I was just a kid then.

The fact that Jacques Cousteau gets so many mentions this thread warms my cold heart.

I credit a few people for inspiring me to get into science - Eric Drexler, Carl Sagan and Jacques Cousteau are my top 3.

In the recent past, Calypso has a checkered history.  There have been legal battles over who owns the ship, and abortive and partially successful attempts to make her seaworthy again.  I lost track a couple years ago, but have not heard that she has been restored.  IIRC, the entire prow from the "harpoon" platform to the observation bubble needs/needed to be replaced.

I'm not much of a John Denver fan, but he's a better singer than just about anyone.

Gotta down vote you. I never heard this version and gotta say it sucks.

That is a HORRID rendition.

There really hasn't been another man like Cousteau.

His son Jean-Michel was quite the explorer.  But compared to the guy that invented the aqua-lung (along with a gas engineer) it's hard to get the recognition.

I'd always wanted to scuba dive but never got around to it until I was nearly 50. For ten years I was a diving fool but now I'm getting too old to do it any more, not to mention that I live about a thousand miles from any divable water. I wish I'd started diving earlier because it's a blast. It also went hand-in-hand with my work in fisheries when I was out on the coast.

This is what it looks like where I am now. The only water is brought up from 300 feet down and piped into stock tanks.

There is good diving off the Gulf coast of Texas at the Flower Gardens -- salt domes about 110 mi out.  Coral reefs, tropical species.  The big fish were fished out, but it's been protected for a while now so are coming back.  A favorite haunt of whale shark, mantas (really cool to swim with; they like divers), and a spawning ground for hammerhead, though you won't see them most of the year.  Max depth ~70'.  There are regular weekend excursions, not that expensive.  I was getting in 5 dives a day.  Check it out!

And everyone should have the opportunity to dive Cozumel.  Outstanding!  Flights out of FL were like $90 and much local competition for dive boats so cheap on that end.

As I got older, I couldn't do many of the things I could when younger, but unless you have a cardio-pulmonary problem, or forget how to swim, you're never too old to dive.
