I initially posted this in the "Italian Cruiser" forum.  I am not getting a lot of views and it does concern you, future Italian cruiser players.

issues I have with the Italian cruisers, oh boy where do I start......

♦  What is the "Mission/purpose of cruisers?

"Cruisers are often called upon to hunt down enemy destroyers, perform quick response duties, escort and protect merchant shipping or larger vessels like battleships and aircraft carriers from various threats, provide an additional layer of defense."

The RM Trento and Zara fail in that duty.  Those ships were equipped with gimmicky smoke (25 secs) and choice between fighter or spotter plane. Yes, I understand that the Italian cruisers are "test ships" but released them to testers in this state...... shocked.  Additionally, I wasted hours of my life..... grinding to try out the Italian cruisers.  They are unable to utilize abilities associated with cruisers such as hydro, radar,  DDFA.

♦  Semi-Armor Piercing (SAP) Shells?

I'm not entirely sold on this direction using SAP rounds.  First off, I personally witnessed the Kiev (Russian destroyer) bounced SAP ammo from Zara's 203mm shells. Moreover, unlike HE rounds I was unable to disable the ship's modules, i.e. propulsion.  The Duca d'Aosta or Abruzzi never had that problem.    If WG is deadset using SAP rounds the rate of fire of the 203mm rounds will be to be lowered from 15 secs to 10 secs.  Mainly because of Italian line is unable to have damage of time (DOT) that other cruisers enjoy.

All is not lost here! The Roma would benefit using SAP over HE.

Sure, it might be challenging to master, but we have precedents. Although I'm a tester, I have seen cruiser bullets ricochet off of destroyers, although not that often. I'm not that upset about shells constantly bouncing off, because in those cruisers I know there would be better days.

Here are some of the features of "Ricochet-off-of-Kievs" Zara shells, according to the WoWS developer blog

Quote

Semi-armor piercing shells have the features of two types of shells at once:

  •
  • Semi-armor piercing shells can ricochet, but the angles of the ricochet are more comfortable than those of armor piercing shells (60–85°);
  • For semi-armor piercing shells, the 14.3-caliber rule will apply;
  • If the ricochet does not happen, the mechanics of semi-armor piercing shells is similar to high explosive ones;
  • Semi-armor piercing shells don’t have over penetrations;
  • Can’t cause a fire
  • Damage and penetration is better than high explosive shells
  • Semi-armor piercing shells deal only 10% of their damage to destroyers.

And here are some of the characteristics of British cruiser AP

Quote

British armor piercing shells have the features of two types of shells at once:

  • British armor piercing shells can ricochet, but the angles of the ricochet are more comfortable than those of armor piercing shells (60–85°);
  • For British armor piercing, the 14.3-caliber rule will apply;
  • If the ricochet does not happen, the mechanics of semi-armor piercing shells is similar to high explosive ones;
  • British armor piercing shells rarely have overpenetrations -- maybe 1/3 on a destroyer -- because of their short fuses
  • Can’t cause a fire
  • Damage and penetration is better than high explosive shells
  • British armor piercing shells deal only 10% of their damage to destroyers.

The only consequential difference is the fact British armor piercing shells do much more damage per shell than Italian semi-armor piercing shells, which is the crux of the problem. Remove that, and one can shoot up to 26000 HP off of a destroyer in one Venezia salvo. The developers were probably afraid that such a volley would be too crippling, so instead they toned it down a bit. Fair, but in the same time Venezia would have shot one salvo another cruiser would have shot two or three, getting around the same amount of damage. Meanwhile, the other Italian cruisers are not offenders.

That's really isn't my main heartburn with the Italian cruiser line. See below:

I cannot find the purpose of having them if they offer nothing more than a new addition.  A shiny ship line that has no mission statement.  WG has to look at this in a broader picture.  Multi-tasking!!! As it stands the Italian line will be last to pick for Scenario, Rank Battles, Clan Battles.

So I going grind Italian cruiser line only to have them as port queens???  They will not be the "Go to CL" you or I pick in its current state.  This smoke generator doesn't support the Division or team in random matches.

They fixed that damage limit and the ricochet limit. So, hunting destroyers should be easier.

Yes? What quick response duties? Like killing a cruiser that suddenly appeared next to your base?

Of course they do that. Sniping off 12k damage off a broadside battleship or something definitely counts.

They are unable to utilize the following normally associated with cruisers....... hydro, radar, DDFA which supports the division or team.

RN smoke is by far the best, most useful smoke. You just have to be good.
