WG, its time you re-worked the ! system

The ! system that tells you when you've been spotted by another ship needs to be changed or removed. It was originally introduced as a band-aid solution to battles where one side had a DD left alive and it was nearly impossible to find or predict where torpedoes would come from. That gave the DD a big advantage (bigger than its stealth should grant). However, the ! since the introduction of radar, has become essentially an exploit-tool for radar cruisers.

Any radar cruiser the instant they see the ! pop up, will light up radar if they dont see any ship visible inside their spotting range/LOS. Why? Because they know their own detection range is practically equal to their radar range...and they know that almost all other ships (bbs and cruisers) they will spot before they get detected. The only thing that will trigger a ! with nothing in sight is a destroyer.

The ! is therefore, a flawed mechanic and needs to be changed.

Possible solutions are:

1- Have the ! only appear if your ship is TARGETED by another ship. This keeps the original function of the ! alive by giving its warning to any ship that a destroyer is inside its detection range and is about to torp them. It gives destroyers the ability to do their job as scouts/flankers or avoid detection as long as they don't lock that cruiser (aka prepare to attack it). Sure, DDs can still fire torps without locking the cruiser but that would require a crazy high level of skill to accurately predict the lead of the torpedoes.

2- Increase detection range of radar cruisers by 2km over their radar range.

3- Introduce a delay timer to the ! appearing when spotted. Say, 30 seconds? Or have the ! pop up only when a ship has spotted you for 30 seconds.

Can't nerf radar ships in any capacity. That would by proxy buff destroyers, and WG is morally opposed to doing that.

I fail to see the "flaw" in the current system.  But admittedly, I'm a cruiser guy...

there is no 'flaw'.

OP just needs to learn how to DD.

Most games have been DD heavy. Radar is needed.

There is no change to radar  suggested at all if you noticed.

Of all the things that are wrong with this game... I think detection mechanics are Fine.

People have poor enough situational awareness as it is. Taking away an indicator would just make things even worse. :Smile_ohmy:

1. We have a 1 pt skill for that, called Priority Target.

2. Nerfing radar ship detection is nerfing radar by proxy. What's the point of radar if you can never catch a DD in open water?

3. 30s is more than enough for a BB to shoot from stealth, cripple you, and fire another salvo at you if you are not alreafy dead. The ! Spotted icon was meant for players to take evasion action long before taking fire from concealed ships. This applies to all ships, and ironically, mostly impacts DDs, the ship type with the least health, armor and mostly no heals.

Works fine as is.  Ever since the concealment nerf most cruisers have a significant gap between their radar range and their detection range.  Smart DD players take advantage of this and bait radar cruisers into using their radar to little/no benefit. I'm not that good of a DD player but I don't have a problem doing this pretty often.
