I recall something from the Dark Ages called Advanced Destroyer Command that ran in DOS, but not an actual Destroyer Command.

Played Destroyer Command in LAN with Silent Hunter II in multiplayer mode. My buddy didn't care for the destroyers because he couldn't catch my sub before I put a torp into his ship, so we traded. He didn't like subs either because I rammed or dropped a depth charge on him when he was trying to shoot me. I told him to play single player for a while to get used to the interface, but he said the game sucked. Ah, the good old days before MMO's.

It has some great graphics, considering the day it was made, but then you almost never use the exterior view in either game, being focused on the plotting charts and weapons controls, which were kind of hokey graphically speaking. It reminded me mostly of the old tabletop games where we used cardboard counters for our ships, so that was kind of a plus for me, being a fan of the old Avalon Hill games.

I have played, did not understand it. I was 7 when I got it. It is still laying around somewhere in my house.

I thought so.  When it first came out, I thought the missions were too hard.   :Smile_sad:   After I got the hang of the game, I realized that like WoT, DC also had an arcade flavor to it.  When you're starring down the optics at a threat that is firing back, it can be a little intimidating.  What I especially enjoyed was the tactical center, an overhead display of the battle area, your ships moving in real-time, and the military-style icons representing the various ships on the map.  This proved to be a vital component of the game, from a strategic point of view.

Though the visuals are blocky compared to games on the market now, the mechanics of the game, player controls, and scenario developments made for a good experience.  Though a decade old title, what I learned there, I applied in reverse in Silent Hunter series.  The online battles between subs and destroyers was ground-breaking for its time, and set me up to look for other, newer MMO naval sims.  Slim pickings, if you ask me.

However, the strats and tacts gained in DC, I hope will also work to some degree in WoWs.
