I look forward to the introduction of a new bote .. err .. boat type.  One thing that hasn't been mentioned, though, and I don't find implied in the announcement:

Do you intend eventually to add ASW characteristics to existing ships?

I would assume so. I mean, unless they want them to be more hated than CVs, there has to be a real counter.

I think the more worrisome thing is whether the player will actually be able to control said ASW. WG is big on automatic things, but I want to drop my own depth charges thank you very much.

Also, weekend. Mods not going to be around, so answer/attention unlikely.

@iDuckman they certainly should. Tap 4 to select roll off stern DCs set for shallow, 4x2 to set medium depth and 4x3 for deep. Tap 5 for side dropped DCs and same as 4 for depth select. Tap 6 for Hedgehogs no depth selection needed they detonate on contact and 7 for Squids they also detonate on contact. HH and Squids both launch forward and to the sides simultaneously.

@Femennenly @Sub_Octavian

@Ellyh ASW on DDs, CL/CAs only and CVs have ASW as a choice for plane load outs.

ASW search and weapons deployment is done at slow speeds. A BB crawling along wouldn't know a sub was close unless it collided with it.

@grorg Deploying depth charges is a piece of cake. No more complicated than selecting AP/HE/Torps and press the LMB!

There is no need to over think it!

@Florendo19 ASW might work like this.

How do you counter a sub when you're "the last hope" and your in BB? The about to counter CV was down as pitiful for DDS and still is so what will make subs a fair part of gameplay?

I don't having DDS able to drop depth charges is a viable option as they are plagued by the above CV imbalance.

Remember, please, that WG has not talked about integrating subs into the existing game.  They will live in a new mode for the foreseeable future.  It wouldn't surprise me if BBs and CVs didn't get to play in the new sandbox until the mechanics are balanced.

sub vs sub or against bots first, so they have time to test

I doubt there will be any answer other than their saying there is no answer - it would interfere with the Gamescon reveal.  They said that more information would be coming during the announcement at Gamescon and as the project develops further.

We're all gonna be pinks.  I predict accidental TKs skyrocking:Smile_unsure:

I firmly believe that they will have to add ASW to all ship types for gameplay reasons. And for all those shouting that the BB and CAs don't have depth charges historically I will reply with the sub fans favorite comment. "This is an arcade game not a simulator" so if you want subs that go above a crawl we get anti sub weapons on all ships.

The tracks are there, and the early Atlantas were built with the projectors as well.

Later removed for weight reasons.  Weight savings were used toward better AA fire.  Atlantas were built as Destroyer Leaders, turned out better as AA cruisers.

There sure are.

They already have a rudimentary system in place. It was used during the Halloween 'test' last year.

Besides as other have already pointed out, many cruisers, and nearly EVERY destroyer in the game right now have modeled depth charge racks and launchers on them. Seems pretty obvious they are gonna get used.

@Slammer58 I don't see how TKs would increase due to ASW weapons. To locate and track a submerged sub a DD using sonar has to go slow. 2 or 3 DDs are needed to triangulate the subs position and depth. Then one of them has to pass over the location and deploy ASW weapons. They wouldn't damage an ally unless they were scaping paint.

It will be interesting to see what WG does. However the "new sandbox" will be much like the CV sandbox. Players will develop tactics for that mode of battle. Without normal game play the result could be a repeat of the CV rework fiasco. I'll be watching to see how WG plans to avoid a repeat.

Agree. It's one of the things I await with interest to see what's going to be done.

In the long run, it might be that with Concealment Expert providing the same bonus to all ships, it will be rolled into all ships and removed so that destroyers can take RPF and run a sub contact down. The limited dive time offers a counter as things stand right now, but I do seriously expect some sort of ASW weapon/sensor fit, possibly an always-on hydro that only detects submerged subs.

How do you counter a DD when you’re a BB and “the last hope”?  If the DD driver is even moderately good you have “no hope”.  DDs are going to be affected, for better or worse, more than any other class by subs.

The same way you counter a wooster or mino when you are "the lost hope" and in a CV.  You don't :Smile_veryhappy:.

Considering that they don't feel people could handle manual aa, what makes people think that ASW will be any different.

We're talking about a company that decided that CV drivers are incapable of driving their boat while flying planes....

Doesn't really pertain to my question

May be easy to implement button wise I'm asking what ships get it.

Am I deploying dpc in my Bismarck?

   Will my daosta get dpc.

How exactly do you fight a sub since rock paper scissors is a thing of the past.

This is skin to AA vs CV with the rework

I wouldn't want to drive my CV while manually flying planes, timing drops and trying to dodge flak all at the same time.

I also wouldn't want to be trying to shoot down planes with AA guns in a DD while in a knight fight with another DD.

I only have two hands and they are both already doing something in those situations.

Sure. And my Gearing gets the AN/RUR-5 ASROC with that lovely W-44 payload.

Witness the Skaggie Aggie (USS Agerholm) trying it out! :Smile_teethhappy:

@grorg I did answer your question. BBs did not have ASW weapons. That is why BBs and CVs are escorted by DDs and CLs aka 'Torpedo Interceptors'!

Of course I suppose spotter planes and fighters could carry DCs. Otherwise you are out of luck.

Difference is yours came into service in the 60s, what I'm talking about was in service in 42 so it could fit into the meta
