General HE Usage In A Battleship Against A Bow-On Battleship?

In this ranked season, some of the strongest battleships appear to be those that can dominate an enemy bow-on battleship.

The three obvious contenders are Musashi, Jean Bart, and Lion (although Lion is otherwise not too strong). Lion and Jean Bart have high fire chances and thus can reliably burn to death anything that refuses to show broadside, while Musashi has the gun caliber to simply punch through with AP regardless.

However, for the rest of the tier 9 battleships, their options are more limited. Granted, some have better survivability than others (Sovetsky Soyuz, for instance, can tank a good bit better than, say, Iowa), but the fact is that using only AP none of them can do more than get deck pens and superstructure overpens (which is a pretty tedious process, to say the least) unless one of them finally makes a mistake and shows a bit too much broadside. And certainly, if they try a bow-on contest with AP against an HE-slinging Lion/Jean Bart or a Musashi that does not make any mistakes, they'll lose. On the other hand, none of them are known for having good HE.

When in a bow-on situation against an enemy battleship (in particular Musashi/Lion/Jean Bart), is it worth switching to HE or is it better to stick with AP?

If you're having fun getting bounces then sure stick to AP. (Doesn't apply to Musashi ofc)

With that said, some ship like JB have fairly weak turret so you can try and aim for those guns but if your target is perfectly bow on, just switch to HE. There's no point AP spamming just to get those lucky 6-7k pen once every 3 salvo.

I find the most annoying ship to face to be Sovetsky Soyuz. Can bounce and shatter most of the stuff thrown at her, has access to a captain that is a giant middle finger in a 6v6 format with his Imma-heal-quickly ability and the limited DamCon is not nearly as much of an issue in that format. I consider her one of, if not the strongest BB for this season of Ranked.

Her HE is not amazing, but fairly servicable so whatever her AP can‘t hurt, the HE is sufficient.

HE spam in a BB is worth it as long as there is no better target to shoot at. If you in Missouri see a bow on Musashi, fling it away.

Like any other situation- if you’ve got AP loaded and your only target is a nose on BB, single click your 1 to get HE selected and fire that first salvo more at the superstructure or jean Bart gums as mentioned earlier... and then HE will definitely be more useful.

You may know this already but don’t unload the loaded rounds if it’s not perfect for your next shot. It’s worth looking around to see if there is an eligible target for the shot you have loaded- but you’re still better off to fire it at a target than reload.

The possible exception may be if you’re dark and very wounded and need to make the shot count- maybe? Circumstances will dictate.

This isn’t aimed at OP so much as anyone newer who may have come in for some answers since OP has over 7500 battles and probably knows this stuff.

The issue is module damage saturation once a fire gets going. Notser has a tip where you aim AP at the back turret. the shells will hit the supertructure and could bite into the deck. That'll give you more damage per salvo than HE.

JB? kill the turrets.

Musashi? Go for that sweet sweet cheek meat.

Lion? Smash him if broadside otherwise let your usn lava chuckers overwhelm his dcp while you focus cruisers.

If you are shooting AP at a bow on battleship, you need to aim slightly further back so your shells drop onto the superstructure (unless you are yamato/musashi and you can lolpen their bows).
