Guessing fire rate. I've never tried them but I've seen them melt BB's from smoke at a good distance with decent damage + fires they spam.

I've been tempted to try them but I honestly don't enjoy the IJN or UK lines. Just not my glass of vodka .

They always said the 'gunboat' and 'torpedo boat' titles were misnomers for the separate lines of DDs.

They are simply 'Group A' DDs and 'Group B' DDs. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. Neither which actually specialize in guns or torps. Which ones you like to play will most likely be some from one group and some from other.

All depends on your playstyle. You want serious up-front gunboat DDs? then grab some vodka and play the Russians. Davai!!

Plus a significant difference in alpha strike when comparing the 127mm vs 100mm main guns (at high tiers).

Up through tier 7 it's less "gunboat line" and "torpedoboat line" as it is "hybrid line" and "main/torpedoboat line". The gun/torp split happens suddenly and without warning at tier 8, because Akizuki, Kitakaze, and Harugumo are not destroyers. They are pocket CLs with a Japanese super-torp launcher, smoke, speed boost, and TRB instead of hydro, DFAA, and radar. IRL Akizuki was made to be an AA ship first and foremost, but they took the fifth turret off and replaced it with the quad torpedo launcher to give it some extra flexibility.

The gunboat part of the "gunboat" line doesn't really start until the tier 8 Akizuki.  Prior to that, the mid tier DDs in that line are just additional stealthy torp DDs.

This was true back when Aki was the end of the line, but now with Kitakaze and Harugumo added in, more than half of the alternate branch are definitely gun boats.

Post-T7 (not really sure why the lower tiers are the way they are but whatever) the line gets a combination of some of the best HE penetration and damage output in the entire game, with even the Akizuki having very little trouble melting through T10 BB health bars. It's because they get a combination of a lot of guns, and a very fast reload that gives them their DPM, and unlike other DDs with the normal 1/6 HE pen rule, they can actually use it since they can pen through 32mm, which means all of the plating on cruisers T8-10 (who aren't Moskva/Stalin) and most of the plating on BBs at those same tiers.

For comparison, the Harugumo full outfitted has ~303,000 DPM with HE, while the DM has ~312,000 DPM (less if they're running the legendary mod, with it being only 274k), and they basically have the same penetration effectively, so they don't even get more shatters than the cruisers like other DDs do.
So yeah, if you want to know why it's a gunboat line, it's because it's a destroyer that does as much or more effective DPM as a DM.

Harugumo is almost all gunboat. 10 guns in 5 twin turrets is something no other DD can match. Shimakaze is more torpedo-centric since she has 15 torps and slow, weak guns. Sad thing is Harugumo almost replaces Shimakaze (almost). Only reason I say this is because of her TRB she can put 12 torps in the water in a very short time. The real thing keeping her for replacing Shimakaze is her horrible manuverability and detection radius. Neither ship is bad. Shimakaze is a stealth torpedo launching monster and Harugumo is the machine gun welding maniac
