Hey

I saw the reload on the T5 USS Hill's main guns went from 4.0 to like 4.6 (4.8 maybe); but since the Wiki is messed up there is no way to verify this.  Also, did the reload NERF hit after the ship was placed in the premium shop or just before, I have not gotten a reply to my question from Wargaming?  Has anyone tried running this boat, how is it?

It is 4.4 seconds with proper captain skill.  I've only had a few matches in her and done fairly well.  She has 2 main weaknesses. (was running a 19 pt captain in her)

  1. Torp Range - typical mid tier US DD - 5.5km torps at 56 kts. Nothing to write home about.  However, when coupled with basically 5 second guns,,,, not very good.  Especially since the Tier 5 Nicholas guns are 3.6 seconds with same torps, although more of them.
  2. Stealth - with slow guns and short range torps,,, 6.4km detection is bad.  especially considering the Tier 5 Nicholas I have at 6.0 km (with capt skill and camo). That gives some DDs she'll be seeing more than a 1km advantage in stealth.

Her biggest Pros are speed and gun accuracy.  She's fast, turns well,,,,, fun to handle.  Almost identical to Nicholas.  But I won't be earning 2 Million XP in her like I do my Kamikaze.

My big questions are on the history here. The bundle carries a flag commemorating William Lowell Hill, MOH, and the date 1881. The only USS Hill I can find is DE-141, a destroyer escort of the Edsall class. It is named for Chief Boatswain Edwin J. Hill, also Medal of Honor, who was killed during the Pearl Harbor attack while serving on the USS Nevada. These are pictures of sister ships.

The Hill we have in WoWS is paper.

Edit:  Even tech tree DD Nicholas in this same tier is paper.  The USN had tons of Wickes and Clemson-class DDs numbering in the hundreds altogether.  They had so many from the WWI and early 1920s era that they ran those until they were hopelessly obsolete in the 1930s and then Farragut came into service.  Even then, not in good numbers.  The USN only made the jump in big numbers in a modern DD to succeed Clemson-class with the Fletcher-class.

In WG's case for Tier V, they probably had issues filling the mid tiers, hence paper Nicholas and now paper Premium Hill.

Hey

It's too bad her detection and torp range weren't a bit closer together, maybe something around a -.3KM difference, -.9km is a lot of detection difference.  I guess that's why they focused more on gun power, but nerf'd the reload a fair bit from the original design for her.  Usable yes, but how popular overall in the end?

When Hill had her former 4s reload, she was strong but balanced by her horrid concealment for her tier.

Now, her gun reload got a 20% nerf and is now barely higher than Nicholas' DPM with four guns ... and yet, Hill still has her horrible concealment.

Honestly, it's that concealment that throws me off. If she had the same as Nicholas, I'd call it balanced. Somewhat. I still think Nicholas is better as she can equip DFAA. But it would be close.

I have yet to get Hill, but it does not seem balanced to me. Yes, it has the highest DPM of its tier, but at least Nicholas has much better concealment and hit points. I think WG was going for the fact that Hill can get its nine torpedoes off more effectively... I do not think that is happening when the enemy has to get 0.9km to you for your torps to hit.

Hey

I have found so far the Hill to be a tough DD to play simply because the concealment versus the torp range, that .9 km difference means you are spotted and taking quite a bit of fire before you can launch torps and in reality you are launching only 6, since you have to do a 180 to launch the other 3.  The guns are decent but highly need BFT for better reload and I only have a 10 pt captain on mine.  Is it really worth spending the points to make it a 13pt captain on a T5 DD when I have other higher tier DD's that could use the points also, I don't think so.

Personally I think Hill as ultra boring DD in a tier bracket where USN DDs are quite mediocre.  You had the craziness of Clemson in Tier IV (torpedo insanity) and in Tier VIII they start getting a lot better (true full stealth builds, improved torpedoes compared to mid tiers).  But Tier V-VII in general, they're very mediocre.  Hill to me is merely another such example.  She's not bad.  But I don't consider her good, either.  She seems to be in line with same tier Nicholas and the two merely trade strengths and weaknesses.  Her performance is also good right now for a Tier V Premium DD.

So IMO she is fine as she is.  It's just again, I find Mid Tier USN DDs to be dull.

I would agree with the evaluations that the Hill is a boring ship, although all of my games in it have been fun (compare this to Gangut, a fun ship where I get 50k damage on average but my team drops dead all the time).

Whatever fun there is is not in the torpedoes; it is not like one is regularly going to use them. Your target would have to go 0.9 km or more into you for it to work, which, to me, sounds like some serious engine work. And you basically get outspotted by every DD, making it perilous.

However, the Hill does not seem to rely on stealth as much as other DDs do. It is easy to maintain a very narrow profile with the ship when kiting, possibly among the narrowest in the game.

Hill's firing angles. Note that one can get all of their firepower at 30 degrees.

What the Hill could do is fire all five guns, use its maneuverability to literally have no profile at all, and get back to firing within a reload cycle. It's almost pointless firing at this ship; it would dodge all your shots readily.

And, by the way, you have the highest HE DPM of the tier, which definitively helps. Why is BFT necessary for reload?

I just got the USS  Hill and I am liking it. Taking a few games to get used to it. The extra gun really comes in handy!  Just have to angle correctly to use them all five.

I don't understand this ship.  With it's poor reload, despite having 1 more gun, the USS Nicholas is straight better.  Nicholas has better DPM with 4 guns and faster reload, arguably better torps, better concealment, and more health.  The USS Hill doesn't make sense.  It's obsolete. Do not play this DD.
