which would be right if it were not made by the Fairey Aviation Company

No one got it was the swordfish that crippled the Bismarck?  :Smile_sceptic:

Yes but it was the Prince of Wales that damaged Bismarck forcing her to head back to France setting the stage for the Swordfish to cripple Bismarck so really, shouldnt we be posting a picture of her?

I know both, no problem there. It's still funny to think of it as "fairy".  :Smile-_tongue:

I can barely spell correctly in American (which is not the same as English btw) let alone getting it correct for German. But I'll try.

And I still think Wunderwaffen1945's little panzer-pult animation is funny.

and that Stringbag is the nickname for the Swordfish.

Outdated ones, to be precise.

The Swordfish torpedo bomber was a significantly outdated design at the time the Bismarck was attacked.  At that point the Germans did not believe they would be facing aircraft that would travel so slowly so their FCS and AA track settings could not be set to the slow speed of the Swordfish.  So, the guns missed because they overshot the target aircraft.

Essentially, the Germans overestimated the progress of the British Navies aircraft in that time frame and it cost them severely.  A single lucky torpedo jammed the rudder and that was the end of that, Duck in a barrel.

If it was just that then it would have not been such an issue (2cm and 3.7cm flak is a by eye thing which can easily target slow Aircraft).  Bismarck's fire control for AA was lacking, the crew was badly trained as they were rushed and it didn't even receive its entire AA suit for the operation. The Myth of its fire-control over shooting the swordfish was the only reason why they got through its one that is wrong, there was plenty more issues with the Bismarck's AA then been "too good" for the swordfish.

Plus what makes that theory worse is that the Germans knew exactly what Aircraft the British would be using and their capabilities as word had got around from their[Germany] allies Italy about the capabilities and composition of British carrier Aircraft from the Taranto operation.

Prince of Wales made the hit that decided the issue. With fuel spilling into the sea and Bismarck down by the bow, he had no choice but to steam for port.

I believe it was from one of the many Discovery/Military channel documentaries on the subject.  But it has been so long that the specific show eludes me.  So...time for you to reciprocate.

They have done a few shows.  I have seen...three...four.  Some using 3D recreations.  Others using various media tied together.  As always some times new things are learned and old ideas pass on.
