So there's a special "Rogue Wave" event coming with a unique mission type - a 4-way brawl between 3-ship teams.  And you can earn:

Benham: USN T9 DD, which has been previewed extensively for the last month or two

Hill: USN T5 DD, which is... an Edsell class destroyer escort?  I haven't seen a single thing about this one...

And I'm a little confused as to whether these ships are for the event specifically like with Halloween and space battles, or if they're "free" premiums you can earn and keep (hopefully the post-apocalyptic camo shown is optional, because yuck).

Anyone want to help me fill in the blanks here?  Been waiting for Benham so I'm on board.

They can be earned for free and you get to keep them.

The reward for completing all four Directives is U.S. destroyer flag_USA_dd9fc06d19a8638f4077ab2fe200d22premium_dac9e09cf46059e1432206f07fdb2eabV Hill.

Fuel Tokens are a new temporary resource as part of the Rogue Wave event. You can exchange your Fuel Tokens in the Armory for Post-Apocalyptic camouflages, credits, Premium Account, and a special reward—Premium destroyer flag_USA_dd9fc06d19a8638f4077ab2fe200d22premium_dac9e09cf46059e1432206f07fdb2eabIX Benham.

Hey there!  The Benham will be available for Fuel tokens which you can earn by playing Rogue Wave.  The Hill will be available for completing a series of Directives during the next update.  The Hill you will also have the option to purchase for cash but the Benham will not be available outside of the event in 0.8.5.

This changes everything, and needs to be publicised EXTENSIVELY and LOUDLY over the next few days.

It is also not particularly fair on those who had already booked travel at this time without prior knowledge of the fact.

So in looking at the event a little more, you can earn a maximum of 850 fuel tokens.  Benham is 800 tokens.  I will be taking full advantage of the 4th of July weekend with some time away from the computer, so I imagine it will be impossible for me to obtain 800 tokens through gameplay and I'll have to decide if I want to buy the premium crates or not.  I do really want a Benham.  Bleh.

Back to the Hill, though... a destroyer escort?  3x 76mm guns and a single triple torp launcher?  How is that going to be a competitive ship?

EDIT: I see Hill's stats posted here:

it's certainly not DE-141 USS Hill.  What the heck is it?

I hope this means it won't be available by other means until sometime after the event.

I can understand this but I am a tad disappointed.

The Benham is very marketable.

Would be willing to wait until 8.# to purchase.

Some of us are just not interested in playing a game mode other than the standard one or in buying 54 premium chests when an equitable outright purchase price could be presented.

Radar's comment said "outside the event in 0.8.5", which at least for implies it would show up to be obtainable in some other way down the road. I'll give it a go and see how close I can get with tokens, but there isn't a ton of leeway there especially if some of the token earning stuff can't be done in the ranked sprints which I'll probably play as well.

Did it ever get made competitive at T9? Last few I saw got blown out of the water without much effort.

@Radar_X can you clarify the wording here? Are you ruling out the possibility of attaining it after 0.8.5? Or that, at least during 0.8.5, the event is the only way to get it?

I wouldn't expect a reply if they do intend to sell it, or make it available some other way after the event.  That would hurt lootbox sales and number of people playing the new event.

The Hill is a paper ship, designed around the late '20s early '30s. It has 5 each  5"/38 main guns and three torpedo tubes I believe three torps per tube. The Hull is a modified Clemson and the superstructure is a combo of a Clemson and Nicholas.

I know that full well. I just want to make it clear to WG that if this is indeed an only-chance event, they have erred grievously in making it so.

From what I've been seeing after further looking, it has multiple configurations that can result in 4 or 5 guns, and either 4 (two per side), 3, (one centerline plus one per side) or 2 (both centerline) sets of tubes.  Could be a fun ship.  I wonder why they named it after a real ship though.  USS Hill was a Edsall Class destroyer escort with what seemed like (after about 5 minutes of looking into it) a fairly nondescript career.

Since when has that stopped people from purchasing things?  :Smile_Default:

I'll be in the same boat as you. Heading on three weeks vacation starting the 5th and will be traveling so no WOWS for me, no way gonna earn enough tokens before then.

Oh well guess gonna have to just "buy" it via the crate purchase. Honestly, does WG not realize that a big chunk of their player base are middle aged and have family. The beginning of July is the time that a lot of people take vacation.

Or maybe they do and time it so that you will have to pull out your wallet if you really want the ship.

I would be very surprised if WG took the time and effort to code in a tier 9 ship and then have it only available for the duration of a single event.  I would wager that the ship will be available by some means at some point after the event.  When and for what method of purchase I wouldn't hazard a guess.

I doubt you'll buy it through creates, could be $200+ to buy it outright.

If you really want the ship so much, just buy the crates...

Yeah, the other thing about this that is interesting is most of Europe takes July & August off as well - I've had German & Swedish vendors tell me getting anything done after June 15th is simply impossible.

By trying to tie people down to play instead of giving them an option to pay, WG is losing out on revenue here.  I just don't see the uptake being all that good on this.

As for paying outright, at 30 tokens a crate, assuming the $5 or so average price of late on a premium crate, for not playing you are putting out over $200 for a ship.

Sad...

I love torpedoe boats and was planning to get Benham. But, because my summers trip was booked way earlier than this, seem like I can only pass her.

Sad again......

Its only 15 fuel tokens per create.  I think the $200 point is about right assuming you can buy creates in larger discounted packs.

I’m just going to toss this out there, and I’ll get a fair amount of flack for it, but the Premium containers do have a chance of dropping T10 perma camos for DDs.  We’ll have to see how much the crates are, but I just might go in for whatever 5000 dubs would cost.  I don’t currently have any DD perma camos, so no chance of getting a redundant camo.

Yeah they're ugly as sin though.  I know you can turn off display of camos like that.  Is it possible to equip them, thereby getting the performance and economic bonuses, but not display them, so you don't have Mad Max breaking what tiny bit of immersion was left in this game?
