Just getting some stuff set up for an alt history  campaign, thought I’d share the lead ship’s ‘new’ history here just for funsies.

the former USS Marion, a screw sloop had been taken as I pirate vessel a few years after the civil war, and refitted.

masts were removed, and the steam engine overhauled to increase its reliability.

now armed with a BL mk1 4.7” gun on the bow, a 47mm Hotchkiss revolving Cannon P/S amid ships, and a 12pdr/3” gun P/S aft.

Why not add USS Constitution as a reconstructed Ironclad for funsies?

mostly because of how the timeline deviates from ours, and in the mid 19th century i think constitution was basically a rotting hulk, and they already had 'new ironsides' any way lol

in the alt history the person who takes the marion is the XO, and then refits her a few years post civil war.

a quick google search she was refitted as a training ship for midshipmen in 1859.

in the alt history the marion was already in the south when the civil war ended, and due to some confederate shiftiness they managed to severely damage the Union government with a sneak attack on DC, and lincoln still gets assasinated, so the union still wins, but is weakened and destabilized for several years preventing the north from initiating the reconstruction period and being unable to maintain control of the frontier territories let alone the former confederate states that still hate them.

In the South farms were in disrepair, and the prewar stock of horses, mules, and cattle was much depleted; 40% of the South's livestock had been killed. The South's farms were not highly mechanized, but the value of farm implements and machinery in the 1860 Census was $81 million and was reduced by 40% by 1870. The transportation infrastructure lay in ruins, with little railroad or riverboat service available to move crops and animals to market and the confederate currency ruined.  If Reconstruction doesn't happen, The South dies.  The only use they'd have for the USS Marion is to feed the starving.  That 4.7” gun would have been sold off to buy food.

that's why in this alt history the confederate states more or less become failed states like somalia, and the coastal areas become ruled by pirates, who can either be selfish, greedy [edited], or could be raiding shipping in order to get money and resources to feed people.
