How do I play a Tier VIII Aircraft Carrier?

Recently I got the Implacable which is pretty nice and I tested it in a Co-Op and Random battle. My planes got incinerated and ripped apart even by ships that I previously didn't consider having strong anti-air.

I have played a handful of matches in the Hermes and Furious, getting a decent amount of WR and SR in them as well as somewhat average damage values. I don't find carriers particularly hard to play, but for me they don't seem to rack up as much damage as quickly as a battleship or cruiser.

In the Hermes I had absolutely no problem with anti-air as most planes I met had none at all or very little, allowing me to get off all my attack runs. In the Furious, some ships had respectable anti-air which would destroy my bombers if I lingered around too long but generally I could get 1-2 attack runs off before being shot down or having to recall my planes.

Not the case for Implacable. My planes get incinerated left-right-and center even if I enter an AA bubble for a few seconds. The heal pack for the torpedo bombers help significantly to allow a single attack run off against a heavily defended ship, but it always isn't available. I've tried many attack runs against ships of many types such as cruisers, destroyers and battleships, both escorted and lone ships. In all scenarios, I found that my planes don't last long at all. Is this supposed to happen? I'm not always reading CV posts since most of them seem to be repetitive arguing or ranting, but I've also read and heard from places where Tier VI was the best tier of a carrier since Tier 4 cannot deal sufficient damage while Tier 8 and Tier 10 planes don't last long under any sort of anti-air fire, while at least early on some people were saying that these carriers couldn't be dealt with easily.

My main strategy is to use torpedo bombers most of the time since they are able to deal the most damage on enemy ships. I switch to bombers and attack fighters while my torpedo bombers are reloading. I don't find them to be as hard-hitting as torpedo bombers but sometimes I am able to get a satisfiable amount of damage as long as some fires. This strategy of mine has been consistent from Tier IV to Tier VII.

What are some particular ships to avoid and how would I get my attack runs to connect without having my planes die too early? Or is this just stock syndrome?

Incorrectly typed "Indomitable" instead of "Implacable", two different carriers.

Every time you advance in a CV you take two steps fwd instead of one. The odd tiered were done away with. That being said, the AA grows noticeably stronger. It sounds like you may be getting bottom tiered into some T10 matches. I face that in my T8 Lexington. I have found when bottom tiered the best you can do at first is spot for your team. Don't linger because if you see them, they have already seen you. Good captains will have their AA turned off until they are spotted by you. They will then flip their AA on and wipe your squad quick.

As the match continues the enemy ships will start taking hits from your team, damaging their AA. Then as they become softened up somewhat, they are more approachable.

Stock CVs are often painful, yes. However, is your commander fully retrained and equipped with the plane survivability/plane speed skills?

Tier 8 is where CV's get real. The number of ships with dangerous to deadly AA increases and where target selection becomes key. I think Yoda said it best...

Torp planes rock. They have more survivability than my t10 Sipan planes. To make the level bombers work you need to know what just used dam com.

They do almost no damage but they se fires really well. German BB they do no damage.

You pray you're top tier, as t9 or 10 ships will just auto-delete your entire squadron and there's jack all you can do about it with how massively overpowered AA is and how inexcusably crippled planes are.

As you go up in tiers on Cv, patience and situational awareness become more and more important, especially if uptiered, at tier 8 it becomes paramount to know which ships have strong AA and not only approach ur target carefully do avoid overlapping AA bubbles, but to also look beyond and make sure you dont fly into them after the attack run, multiple ships and their corresponding AA bubbles will wreck your planes, I typically start with attack planes and go after DDs or isolated cruisers or the occasional Bb that wanders out to far, knocking out AA modules on a ship can pay off when you come back with torp or bomber planes right after.

You have to be opportunistic, learn how and when to drop planes and attack with half or 2/3 squads, and punish anyone out of formation. CVs in the current meta are basically formation punishers, anyone out of line, on their own, or overextended becomes a valid target and you need to leap on that in order to deal damage.

Also, keep an eye out for critically injured targets, it may be worth sacrificing a squad and a speed boost in order to wipe out a ship trying to limp out of a fight, as, for the most part, critically damaged ships hit just as hard as full health.

That being said, know which ships to avoid unless you absolutely need to push into them. Anything with those nasty 3-inch guns (DM, Woster, Mino) is a usual no-go zone, and keep in mind that torp planes can be far more resilient than any other squad. DPS is a bigger killer than flak.

Much like Destroyers, Carriers become more powerful the longer the match goes as ships dwindle and mounts are destroyed. Save your squad for the rest of the fight when formations break down and shots are traded.
