I have 5 choices.

1. USN cruisers(currently on tier 3)

2. USN destroyers(4)

3. USN battleships(3)

4. KM cruisers (3)

5. KM battleships(not yet)

I enjoy the Charleston and the St. Louis. I like the KM tier 2 cruiser (I forgot what it’s called). I don’t really like S. Carolina. I also enjoy the USN destroyers.

KM BB's are fun... Just get used to bad dispersion... It teaches you the game really well.

All 5 of those lines have a ship or two that will drive you crazy. KM Cruisers would be my recommendation. They do a little bit of everything.

KM cruisers are fun after tier 4.  The tier 3 (Kolberg) can't punch its way out of a paper bag.

You start seeing the advantage of the HE pen at tier 4, but the thing has no armor and limited range.

Once you hit tier 5, you still have no armor, but the range (up to 16.5 km) allows you to pick your engagements (and have time to dodge).

The tier 4 U.S. cruiser (Phoenix) is a completely different creature than the St. Louis  Better range, worse armor, much faster (like DD fast).  Another ship you need to know how to angle and dodge.

I would go with the US CA/CL line. Right no with carriers dominating everything, I would play ships that are going to be most effective vs Skyplague

USN CL. It's an AA wasteland the way CVs are now. There really are 2 choices, Mino or Worc.

Why not French cruisers? I had more fun grinding that line than many others. Extremely strong right now.

USN Cruisers are a lot of fun, even the lower level ones (all are kinda squishy).  At higher levels they can become monsters.  The USN BBs are SLOOOOW.

It really never hurts to try a little of all of them and find out what fits your playstyle ... which will/can change over time.  Have fun!

Should I choose CAs or CLs?

Both...& DDs & CVs...try them all to T4 (doesn't take long to grind to T4 in a line) & then grind them all to T6...then by that time you will have a good idea of just what fits YOUR particular playstyle & not somebody else's guess about what your playstyle should be.

Every line has it's own tricks & balances by T6...some get radar from T8 on but generally all the nations basic "benefits" are revealed by T6.

Good luck w/whichever you decide.

USN DD's are fun. Short range torpedos until T7 AFTER upgrade. Good AA for DD's.Even offers DF in exchange for a gun or speed boost.

USN Cruisers squishy, but good AA. USN CA's decent to hard hitting AP. Glass cannons until T8 Baltimore. CL's good to excellent AA all the way through. Made of citadels.

USN BB's are slow as smoke on a cold day until T8 North Carolina. Then a change as noticeable night and day. T8 and up good AA. All 16" rifles T8-T10

Grinding US battleship and cruiser lines will give you more options if you choose to purchase Premium ships in the Premium Shop.     Food for thought if you're collecting Premium ships.    But, KM bb's and cruiser are fun also.

You will want to try them all ... coming from the Omaha, I'd suggest first trying the Dallas, then Helena, staying with the CL's ... the Helena is one of my favorite ships and can be a real monster.  Don't go beyond T7 until you have enough experience to feel comfortable getting into high tier matches.  The Cleveland at T8 will put you into Tier 10 a lot.

After some experience with the Helena, then get the Pensacola, etc on the CA side.  The "Pepsi Cola" can be squishy, but you are now firing 203mm shells and can pack a lot of punch.  The New Orleans can be very strong as well.  As you can see, I don't have the Baltimore ... I don't like getting thrown into Tier 10 all the time.

Someone mentioned the US DDs as well ... and they are right, they are a blast.  Clemson at T4 is a little monster, worth keeping long term.  They take a little getting used to but just keep getting stonger the higher you go.

From that list: german cruisers. Out of your list: IJN cruisers.

Both are comfortable to play as a newer player. Both have good to excellent range, so if you make a mistake, you might not be punished. Playing US or UK cruisers requires a closer playstyle, more awareness of angling and being able to use island cover effectively.

Stick with german cruisers until you are more comfortable with the game mechanics.

Dresden. Emden (if available in the shop or the Armory,) is it's famous sister and a premium ship. Love both.

KM bbs are fun for up close in your face brawls. The secondaries at high tiers sandblast dds. The aa isnt usn good but not ijn bad either. Acoustics are amazing. But its a brawler not a sniper. Very forgiving of mistakes.

KM ca line just gets tankier the further you go. Suicide torps are a terrific deterrent. It can kite... it can brawl... its AP is bar none for alpha on tech tree cruisers.... It even has dfaa if youre willing to trade in acoustics. Very forgiving of mistakes (for a cruiser).

Usn cruisers lob fire over islands... and make dds lives hell with radar... excellent aa. Im not a fan of the island hiding meta though so not my thing.

Usn dds are your safest dd bet in the current cv meta (unless you count rn cls). Midway will still nuke your gearing in the first 2min of the match... and tell you to git gud... but every other dd has it even worse off.

Usn bbs are snipers. Super accurate but floaty super heavy shells. KM ships worst enemy at a distance. AA is super solid.

I’d go German BB and/or USN Destroyers from your list.

German and Brit DD also rock.

French BB and Brit BB are worthwhile.

Good luck!

German battleships, they are the most fun later down the line.  USN cruisers suck at mid tiers, USN battleships are slow until T7.

Each ship, each line has its strengths and weaknesses so this becomes a question of play style & personal choice.

USN BB's are slow until T8 but they have good main guns.

USN tech tree cruisers do not have torpedoes after T5. Plus their guns have a shorter range.

I enjoy the Yorck & Hipper. The Nurnberg, with the gun arrangement, is different. I haven't got the Roon yet.

I have 6 of the 7 KM BB's in T6 thru T8, no Tirpitz Black. I play these ships a lot. They are fun.

Hi! Welcome to WoWS.

Personally, I had a lot of fun in the USN destroyers - particularly at low tier, they present a fun run-and-gun style of gameplay, and with a heavy torpedo armnament on each side means you can yolo rush enemy ships and have a good chance of killing them.

If you dont like slow battleships, stay away from the USN battleship line - it takes to the Tier 8 (North Carolina) to get a ship that doesnt max out at 22 knots.

Cruisers can be hard to play - they are easy to kill and dying early is never fun.  I'd suggest keeping these in reserve until you get a better feel for the game first.  Also, personally, I've found the low-tier French cruisers (from T3 onwards) to be easier to play as they are all similar; there are no big jumps in style like there are with USN or German cruisers.

Finally, the below is the standard advice I give to new players - happy to help if you have any specific questions.

For new players, I recommend the following as easy to learn and to play:

  • Destroyers: American destroyers are the easiest to play - their fast firing guns, and torpedoes on both sides (at low tier) means that its a fast, fun run-and-gun style, with great smoke screens.  They are very forgiving - rush in, gun enemy destroyers, and if you win and live, then rush up to a battleship and shove him up with torps... once you get more experience, you can do all of those things better, faster, longer etc.
  • Cruisers: French cruisers are probably the easiest to play at low-mid tiers. Load HE, shoot slow targets at near your max range to set them on fire - when they repair those fires, set more.  Dodge incoming shells (particularly from battleships) by slamming into full reverse and throwing the rudder over into a hard turn - then accelerate away again before the next salvo comes.  Use your long-range torpedos to shoot down narrow alleys where the enemy is coming from - sometimes you'll get a hit, and it'll be great. More fires!
    • DO NOT start on the British Cruiser line - these ships take detailed understanding and experience of the game mechanics in order to play; things like target selection, map positioning, map awareness, spotting mechanics, AP bounce and shatter mechanics, smoke screens, fire detection range in smoke, sonar and torpedo aim all to be functional. Experienced players even struggle with this line.  Steer clear.
  • Battleships:
    • British: These are sturdy battleships that have excellent HE direct damage and high fire chance - unlike most battleships, shooting HE at things will make them go boom. Because of that, and because they have decent armour protection generally, these battleships are easy to learn: aim well, and profit.
    • German: Much stronger armour, but wonky/inaccurate main guns - you'll mostly be shooting AP shells at enemy battleships and cruisers.  However, your battleships have good to excellent secondary battery (particularly from Tier 7) and are a defining feature of the line.  Because they are meant to be played up close to the enemy, these ships are easier to aim, take solid damage, and encourage your team to push the capture point you're currently on, helping to win games.
  • Aircraft carriers: Personally, I suggest avoiding them entirely for now - they are very different to play and hard to do well at.  They are currently undergoing a major re-work (moving from a 2D RTS style control interface into controlling only one squadron at a time in the 3D environment view you know from playing other ships).  Until the re-work settles down, and community contributors can make specialised content to help new players approach carrier play, I suggest learning the other ships first.  There will be plenty of time to come back to carriers later.

Once you have a few more battles under your belt, I strongly encourage you to read the following:

Dont even bother with DDs in current meta. BBs are way more forgiving but if you lika a challenge KM cruisers for Battlecruiser Hindenburg. USN cruisers for Wooster, a ship with more consumables then you have fingers, also good in current CV meta.

Both BB lines are strong if you prefer BBs. Kurfurst is the most forgiving.

I just played Kolberg and I really enjoyed it, more then St.Louis and Charleston. Somehow I never played it before although I purchased it a while ago.

( I also played the Langley and hate it, I’m just not used to it)

I suddenly noticed I like high reload. I’m so bad with S. Carolina, Charleston, and St. Louis.
