Amen to that. Off the top of my head, I cannot think of another machine in the history of warfare where what made it antiquated and obsolete in the first place was also its greatest strength.

By far the best book on this aircraft I have read is by Swordfish pilot Charles Lamb. He knew how to handle these things (he flew two Italian fighters into the sea!)

I'll still take a Dauntless or an Avenger anyway.

Hell I'd take a Devastator over a Swordfish. And that was a flying coffin!

The Devastators cruising speed was only 15 MPH slower than the Swordfishes top speed.

The Swordfish had a good stall speed due to its being a biplane, and had slightly better range than the Devastator.

The Avenger:

1000 mile range.

3 Machine guns, (Eventually 4). 275 MPH top speed. 30,000 ft ceiling.

Grumman got it right.
