The Tenryu class was a class of light cruisers operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy before and during World War II.  2 ships made up the class, Tenryu and Tatsuta.  This class was also the first class of light cruisers operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy.  Tenryu was sunk on December 19, 1942 by the submarine USS Albacore (SS-218), while Tatsuta was sunk on March 13, 1944 by the submarine USS Sand Lance (SS-381)

The IJN considered turning the Tenryu class into AA cruisers much like the RN "C" class modifications.  They would have been armed with 4 x 12.7 cm HA gun mounts and two type 94 HA fire control directors would have been installed.  These would have all been on the centerline in about the same positions as the former 14 cm mounts.  Also included was provisions for 4 x triple 25 mm mounts.  This would have also trunked the three funnels into one.  While the funds were made available in one of the 1937 programs, heavy burden in the shipyards did not allow time for the conversion.  In 1938-9 another conversion was planned but with twin mounts of the 8cm/60 cal. HA guns that eventually ended up on the Akizuki-class AA destroyers.  The conversions might have made the cruisers more valuable to the IJN due to the increased effectiveness of aircraft in the war.
