It's Pi day for the Americans because they put the month first. For Aussies and others who put the day first, 22 July would be better (22/7, not the closest fractional approximation but the easiest to remember and use).

its a mathematical constant. 3.1415926535897932384626433............................................

its the outer ratio measurement of a circle to its diameter...  used to calculate the area of circles, circumference and all sorts of complicated algorithms that'll make your head spin.
