Hello, I am thinking about starting a cruiser line but was wondering which nation has the best overall cruisers as far as range, damage, and armour ? I recently returned to wows and a lot has changed since the last time I played so got a lot of learning to do again .

Oh... there will be a lot of explaining to do. There is no best cruiser line, but each nation has their own playstyles.

I'll have to provide a summary later (probably not because someone more knowledgable will beat me to it).

What nations has the best cruisers?

Everything has their own unique styles. There is no best or worst. You have the light cruisers of the Royal Navy with their fragile hull and decent speed, and you have the Japanese which burn stuff. Germany has the good AP, and on and on. The Wiki is very valuable for helping pick a nation to play (for me at least).

I like the French ones personally, but if you're looking to grind for a Tier X trophy, go for a Des Moines. She's a load of fun

Since you asked for "range, damage and armour" that would be Germany.

They're certainly not the "best" though, since they lack speed, concealment and radar.

Depends on your play style. What are you wanting? Cruisers to kite damage? Lob shells over islands? Torpedo with? Plow in and brawl like battlecruisers? AA ships?

american cruisers can do a little of everything. and with the current CV rework, you see more of them than the other nations since their AA is pretty good, their radar is good, the SHS of the heavy cruiser is great and the dpm of the light cruiser is scary.

My favorites are Russian. The Tashkent and Khabarovsk are a couple of the best cruisers in the game :)

Agree.  As a whole line (cruisers) I like the French, Japanese too.  But I think the DM is the best T10 cruiser so it's worth the grind in an arguably more difficult line to reach T10

I second that!

They're definitely the most flexible.  There are heavy-hitter AP cruisers and dakka dakka HE cruisers.  We have it all!  It's the cruiser buffet!

I would suggest trying out the US, IJN, or German cruisers lines first, as they seem to be the most friendly of the cruisers to play. USN cruisers are jack-of-all-trades; theyare able to provide HE fire and AA to escort but are able citadel other cruisers with AP. Japanese cruisers have a high chance to set other ships on fire, carry long-ranged torpedoes, and have CAs with heavy alpha strikes.

You can also try Russian cruisers; they have long range but squishy broadsides. I don't recommend playing Royal Navy light cruisers; they can only shoot AP and require an understanding of game mechanics, cruiser tactics, and effective use of defensive consumables.

Probably your safest bets!  USN CAs can be a bit rough around tiers 6-7 if you aren't used to cruiser play, but there's no true lemons in the line.  Baltimore and Des Moines are both excellent ships for tier.  The IJN CAs are great for learning cruiser play, since they have a little bit of everything, but also HE with great fire chance and damage to fall back on.  Furutaka has her fans, but Myoko is probably one of the best ships for mid tier cruiser play in the game, both for fun and power.

The Exeter event got me to rebuy the Myoko, and I've remembered why I used to like her so much.  Such a great ship.  People say the IJN CAs are all similar to each other, but there's just something special about Myoko's firepower at tier 7.   You're running around with 10 203mm guns + 6 10km torps/side, when most other heavy cruisers are sitting on 8 guns with self defense torps at best.

Dont do IJN. They are easy as hell to citadel until you get the zao. Their rof is almost the same as a kronshdadt even though the kronshdat has much bigger guns. USN is good but you are still easily one salvoed. Both lines take a lot of skill to play. I suggest german line because their turtleback armor prevent citadels at close to medium range. French henry is also interesting but i dont own that one. However, i was in your shoes and have slightly regretted going the des moine route. It takes a lot of angling, stealth, positioning, and luck to play it.

As someone who owns every T10 cruiser other then Henri (on Saint Louis), I have to say they each have their own distinct playstyles and quirks.

The only I can flat out not recommend is Moskva, I have never liked that ship and can't get it to work for me. Though that is a playstyle difference on my part, the rest of the Russian line is rather good imo.

Unlike the German line which is all mediocre to awful till you get to Hindy. Hindy is a marvelous ship and probably my favorite cruiser to play.

The Japanese line was the first I finished and has a good mix of very strong and fun ships (Furutaka, Myokou, Mogami) and some stinkers (Aoba, Ibuki), and then at the end you get Zao, a very strong ship with railguns, Shimakaze torps, and trollish armor, only thing about Zao I don't like is her frustratingly long reload.

The two US lines are a very mixed bag, both T10s are strong, though I lean towards DM due to the better turret setup and the strong AP. Some highlights are, Baltimore, Cleveland, Helena, and the stinkers being mostly Seattle and maybe Pensacola but Pensa isn't too bad.

The British line is the epitome of high risk and reward imo, with Mino being one of the most fun T10s in the game. It also includes Fiji, one of the strongest tech tree ships in the game and the stinkers on the line being Edinburgh and of course Emerald.

As for the French line, I've enjoyed my time with them so far, no real stinkers in that line from my experience and that is always a good sign.

If I had to pick just one line to play it would probably be USN CLs but man, the Des Moines is fantastic.  The truth is that even within each line there comes a point where cruiser play changes.  Going from Fiji to Edinburgh and then from Neptune to Minotaur in the RN line will give you schizophrenia.  Same with going from Kirov to Budyonny.  Both are great but they don't play the same way at all.  For me I guess it boils down to which cruiser I feel most comfortable in.  Right now I'm Playing Fiji and Minotaur in the RN line.  Cleve and Dallas in the USN line and Bud and Chappy in the Russian line.  Each one brings something different to the table whether it's the long range laser beams of the Russians or the Sky high floaters of the USN that can shoot over islands or the rapid firing RN tissue paper armor CLs.  RN gets smoke and the choice of smoke or radar at higher tiers.  Russians have that long range radar, Germany has great hydro, hard hitting guns....  There's a lot to consider.

One bit of advise I can offer is to head on over to the test server when it is up and try out some different ships at various tiers and see what you like.  It does't cost a dime and you can even earn some live server rewards.  Best of all though, you can try ships of most nations and tiers and see what fits your play style and what doesn't and then plan your grind accordingly.  It helped me out a great deal and gave me a chance to offer input on upcoming changes to help improve the game.
