I think it's a worthy successor to the older Fletcher class, especially the armament compared to the older 5 single weapon turrets it has better armament with it's 6 5" batteries in dual turrets, it is very worth the duty of a defensive Destroyer for the Carriers it would have defended had the ship been designed earlier in WWII .

Great looking destroyer I say it would be tier 3 up to maybe just maybe tier 5 but it will most likely be tier 4ish and is it using the 5 inch twin batteries?
Yes, Dual Turreted 5 Inchers adding 1 extra 5 Inch gun and 2-3 extra Dual 40 MM Bofors, and a Combat Information Center(CIC) making it the first Destroyer class ship with a CIC.

Ha! I visited the USS Laffey recently. Lemme get some pics up, I'll show you guys:

Posted Image

USS Laffey, DD-upwards of 600. EDIT: Guy on the bottom righ left. in the BSA uniform is my scout leader. He's crazy but does fun, sketchy things.

Posted Image

A dual-mount 5" turret. Only one is open to the public, but my scoutmaster is one hell of a sneaky devil and we managed to see all three. They are both rusted like crazy.

Posted Image

A shell room. This actually has a chain across the opening and there is a hatch in the roof that leads to the elevated turret. Was unlocked and we looked inside, apparently.

Posted Image

Rear shot

Posted Image

That's the turret we entered from below.

Posted Image

A depth charge.

Posted Image

A hatch that happened to be unlocked. It leads to a rusted void tank apparently.

Posted Image

A section of closed-off engine room- you had to lift up a set of stairs to access it, which we did. Yay exploring!

And those are all the pictures I took of the destroyer.

You have the Gearing listed, but the USS Gearing was the lead ship of a new destroyer class. The Gearing class was an improvement over the Sumner class through the addition of a lengthened hull, roughly 14ft if memory serves. This allowed for additional fuel to be carried, increasing the range. Otherwise, the ships were nearly identical.

(+1) for Ross and mrlazorz

According to Conway's the Gearing class was basically a Sumner class lengthened 14 feet.  As previously mentioned this increased fuel capacity, but also reduced wave making resistance that restored some speed.  Early on they were also referred to as 'long-hull Sumners'.

Sumner class

Gearing class

Both classes would certainly make good choices for a destroyer to command.  6 x 5 inch / 38 DP main armament and  (10) 21 inch torpedo tubes will make them very effective in the destroyer role.

The fun thing is finding all the hatches with misplaces/bad locks.

Or going "off-tour" on the carrier, e.g. to the anchor room (off tour, cool place) or below decks (found at midnight by scoutleader and his friend. We never went.) Those ships are fun.
