One of the polls is for your favorite "action movie".  This such a wide category and there are so many good movies in it, I'm interested to see what your answer is.  Here's mine.

Spoiler

  1. Seven Samurai
  2. Apocalypse Now
  3. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
  4. Kill Bill, Vol.1
  5. Deadpool

  5. Mad Max

And I have to throw in, Ronin.

Dang, forgot about Pulp Fiction ... a classic favorite.  I did have Aliens listed until I remembered Sean Connery ...

Spoiler
  • Jurassic Park
  • Top Gun
  • Hunt for Red October
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Lord of the Rings ... all of them

Should have picked Yojimbo instead of Seven Samurai. Every so often there is a watershed movie that puts all the pieces together for a genre. For action movies, that film is Yojimbo. All that followed used the same structure. Kurosawa was an influential director

3.  You Only Live Twice.

4.  Hard to Kill

5.  John Wick

Before he hid all the answers, I saw so many more that were good.

Lord of the Rings?  Top movies, for sure, but "Action"?

Similar question -- is Deadpool action, comedy, or fantasy?

I was asking the same thing when I read your list.  I'd classify it as an action comedy.

1) Ronin

2) Gone in 60 Seconds  (1974)

3) Mad Max

4) Dr No

5) Goldfinger

I pretty much gave up on action movies when it became a contest to see who could fit the most explosions into and hour or so.

I debated that.  (Also Throne of Blood. Ran. etc. etc.)  Seven Samurai has more action and IMO is overall a slightly better film, but Yojimbo is a very worthy choice.

Toshiro Mifune for Best Action Hero!

That has to be the greatest car chase of all time IMO. I just never could get into the remake, though. But the original- that was an amazing film

Throne of Blood is my personal favorite. Did you know that in order to get the right look of terror on Mifune's face at the end of TOB Kurosawa used real pointy arrows in that last scene?

I agree SS is a better movie, but as a writer the whole plot structure for American movies comes from Yojimbo.

And the opening shot of a dog walking down the village street with a hand in his mouth and no one cares is fantastic

this is a Christmas movie ...get yer genres straight :Smile_veryhappy:

It's an action sub-genre of a holiday movie.  Kinda like Dr Strangelove is a war comedy. :Smile_trollface:

Deadpool ? it's a dark comedy just like the comics.

Not a fan of action movies myself...

Surprisingly it actually has a good if thin plot.

Excellent plot and the chases make sense within that plot instead of feeling like fluff to make the movie last longer.

Yep, great example to future filmmakers on how to do car chases.  I still think Ronin did it better, but no doubt the director was influenced by Gone In 60 Secs...

Along with Ronin, Bullitt and French Connection did a better job of incorporating a car chase into the plot.
