Skip to the end.  Khabarovsk is frustrating for a non-unicum CV to deal with, so Khab becomes a mean boat late in the game when the only players remaining are a couple of surface ships and both teams' carriers.  Buffet time comes when the CVs move forward for faster turnaround, and they get distracted with CV-CV jousting (which they often do).  The AA flag and sector reinforcement even makes it a bit of a plane threat,  though it threatens T8 planes a lot more than the beasts Haku and Midway send out.

It's funny, Shimakaze being the anti-Khaba in every way, I thought that 8.0 would kill off their relevance completely.  And often that's true; isolated Shimas are food now more than ever.  Sometimes, though, I've seen Shimakazes make a big impact in CV games, most often by sticking near escorts and enhancing team pushes with extra walls o' torp death.  It's an effective tactic and, honestly, probably closer to what older folks would call a real fleet action. With a few updates to tame the worst airborn OP-ness (F-key immunity, Haku-spam, USN AA suckola, more fighter drops and cat fighter effectiveness), I think the changes might result in a more tactical and teamworkish type game.

Yeah -- have been experimenting with my Shima since 8.0.  Never been much of a Shima player, but I feel like there might be some new opportunities for this DD dependent upon my willingness\patience to hang close to my cruisers early to mid match.  But yeah -- one slip up and the 8.0 air swarms you and rockets the crapout of you.

Its a brave new world for DDs --again.  One in which I won't be pushing caps or scouting for my team since  both are now suicide missions.

What I find fascinating is how often DD play has had to adapt to major game mechanics changes over the last 5 or 6 months.  Radar saturation -- revise my DD tactics.  8.0CV -- revise my DD tactics.

Conversely when I play my cruisers and BBs -- its pretty much the same thing I've been doing in BBs and CAs since I started this game.  No need to adapt to a new meta every 6 months.

That seems baked in the cake when you design a game around DDs being the fragile pointy end of the spear.  Post-8.0 the answer for most ship types is to sail closer together.  DDs have to figure out how to do that while still providing eyes for the team, capping, exercising map control (ie, patrolling flanks and chasing off flanking pushes with torps), hunting enemy DDs, etc etc.

Notser provides an excellent example of how to succeed with DD play in 0.8.0 in a recent video.

You just have to ignore the commentary where he complains about not being able to do anything while he's methodically putting up a 130K damage winning DD game while being CV-harrassed the whole time.

Excellent observation.
