From Vallter,

Q: Will you be able to give a warship a name and make it displayed to other players? Also, are we going to be able to fly flags, to reflect country and clans?

A: It's planned to allow players to select warship name from the premade list. As for flags, we do plan to allow clan flags aside of regular premade list of flags (which will include countries).

How about " USS Kick*** "

It is not my cup of tea but if the community wants it, sure, why not?   I'd suggest setting up the identification icons to switch to what class of ship it is with the alt key function, like WoT, for those that don't know ship recognition silhouettes that well.

I think that's the spirit.  Check a list of ships that were part of the class.

For clarification, the ship names will be from a pre-made list of names of ships in the class. That is, if you have a Montana class battleship, you could name it Montana, Ohio, Maine, New Hampshire, or Louisiana.

Naming ships from a historical list is cool.

The customs would have quickly gotten out of hand.
Indeed. It will also allow some people to relive their favorite ships. For example, there was someone on Youtube who wants to give the orders "Flank speed, hard left rudder!" He'll get the chance to get a Fletcher class destroyer, name it the USS Johnston, and perform that maneuver!

Personally, I would like to get a Yorktown class carrier, name it Hornet, and stock it up with 16 stripped down B-25s (I REALLY hope that's an available armament for that class!)

I agree. Seems to be a simple and elegant solution to have the USS SUCKMYBALLS blowing you out of the water.  Towards the top end ships, options will be more limited but I'm not sure that's a problem.

Meh, i'd rather have a custom name with a very restricting name filter on it. I personally dislike seeing multiple ships with the same name floating around. (no matter how cool or authentic the names are)

Seems to me that it would be quite easy to create a blacklist of words or something? Cause if you dont see it in the ship names, you'll see it in the player names...

Considering how widely varied some ship class names can be (There were 175 Fletcher class destroyers, for an extreme example), seeing repeated names should not be too much of an issue.

Also, the black listed names can become an issue, because camouflaged and phonetically inappropriate names like Gawblcoque and implicatively inappropriate names like Bullship will be considered acceptable by the system, while fully appropriate names like John Hancock will be restricted.

Well, if you don't restrict certain names to certain classes and nationality, i guess it might work. Cause i'd like to give my ship a name that (at least) looks original on my boat. USS Iowa #44631 gets a bit boring if you've just unlocked your Iowa class ship. But still, if someone wants to go total [edited] with names, he/she'll do it anyway. For example I never found the shipnames in NF that annoying. (but maybe that was because there were a lot of mods watching the waiting rooms..)

And yes, a blacklist has its disadvantages, but if properly filtered you'd still have a lot more (creative?) options than just one big list.

Im fine with a premade list,to me its the gameplay that will make the game not the ship names, but if they let us make our own names with a given ruleset and a word filter.i wouldnt be against that either

I'm not sure how they plan to implement this feature since it seems like you'll need to pick a name from a predetermined list.  In general, I would prefer the ability to make whatever name I wished but I know that opens the door for USS Sexcutioner ;)

um not exactly. some ship designs did not have an offical name assigned, so they will be a lot more flexible with thoes (the U4 L2 and L3 M2 and M3  and N2 of Great Brittian, the Tillmans of the US)

Many unnamed ship designs seem to tend to be too vague in design to effectively model without excessive amounts of "original research" (Read as "winging it")....

Such ships might also simply have a single name consisting of the project title. There most likely WILL be ships with only one name option, such as the HMS Dreadnought.

Hmmm, do I name the ship after the most famous ship in the class, or something more obscure?

I wonder if the chosen name changes anything or only we know our ships name. I guess the team panels might show the name we choe, or better yet we could read it on the bow.

I bet there will be hipsters who name their ships after the least noteworthy ship of the class, simply because of how little-known it is.

Also, I believe other players will read the name off of your ship's bow and stern. What is less clear is whether it will appear in the player list. Perhaps there will be an option in the player list to show ship names versus class names? Or the ship name fills the space otherwise taken by a tank or plane type in the other two games, while the profile of the ship indicates its class?
