Oh goodie.  Loot boxes.

If you can't detect the sarcasm, let me just assure you it was dripping with it.  I am not a fan of the current gambling epidemic sweeping through online gaming and it annoys me to no end to see it here in World of Warships.  The bait being used this time is the possibility of scoring some premium Pan Asian ships, including the new premium Irian (review due out soon).  There's also some cosmetic camouflages up for grabs along with the usual fillers of temporary camos, doubloons, free experience and premium time.

Lemme be stupidly clear:  I do NOT condone loot box gambling.  I'm doing this for three reasons.

  1. There's no financial risk to me.  I spent no real-world moneys doing this. I used doubloons gifted to me by my readers of which I had 68,856 to begin with.  Spending 26,664 of that is no big deal.
  2. I needed access to Irian to complete my review.  Rather than wait on Wargaming to give me access to it at no cost to me (and they most likely would in another day or two), I jumped the gun to get a head start.
  3. The information I can provide my readers of this experience may be helpful.  Take my results as one person's experiences.

But let's repeat something so there's no mistaking it's import:

I spent no real-moneys doing this. I used doubloons gifted to me by my readers.

Got it?  The risk here for me was zero.  Absolutely zero.  This was effectively gambling with free chips and with my wallet left at home.   My intention was to spend 8,888 doubloons three times regardless of what RNG spat out in the crates.  I went into this with the expectation that Irian was going to cost me 26,664 doubloons and I would still buy all three bundles even if I won her out of my first crate.

Before we go any further, it's important to understand the starting status of my account.  Wargaming has learned their lessons from the Hallowe'en 2017 pumpkin containers and appears to have limited the number of duplicates that can be awarded through loot boxes.  This may be applied here, but I'm not certain.  This is especially important to understand because it could affect the RNG of rewards.

  • As stated previously, I began with 68,856 doubloons.
  • I have a premium account. This shouldn't matter, but who knows if it's an influence?
  • I already have the premiums Anshan, Loyang and Huanghe on my account. My guess is that this eliminates them as options from dropping from loot containers, but I may be mistaken.

]Start-1024x645.png
Let's get stuck in, shall we? Here's the first bundle available in the Arsenal and my starting doubloon total.

Lunar Year Bundle #1

I went from 68,856 doubloons down to 59,968 and ended up with 15 of the Premium Lunar Year 2019 containers.  I opened them right away and they contained the following:

  • 2x Temporary Camouflage "Mosaic" x3
  • 2x Temporary Camouflage "Spring Sky" x3
  • 2x Temporary Camouflage "Type 59" x6
  • 2x Temporary Camouflage Lunar Warrior x12
  • 1x 20,000 Free Experience
  • 1x 750 doubloons
  • 1x Eight Days Premium Time
  • 1x Lunar New Year - Loyang Permanent Camouflage
  • 1x Lunar New Year - Huanghe Permanent Camouflage
  • 1x Lunar New Year - Anshan Permanent Camouflage
  • 1x Lunar New Year - Irian Permanent Camouflage

So no ships but this brought me back up to 60,718 doubloons.  Receiving all of the permanent camos though would pay off with Lunar Bundle #2.

Start2-1024x826.png
One down, two to go.

Lunar Year Bundle #2

I spent my next 8,888 doubloons, bringing me down to 51,830.  Upon purchasing this, I was immediately given back 5,000 doubloons from having already won the Irian permanent camouflage.  It also gave me another 9 Premium Lunar Year Containers which contained the following:

  • 1x Temporary Camouflage "Type 59" x6
  • 4x Temporary Camouflage Lunar Warrior x12
  • 2x 750 doubloons
  • 1x Eight Days Premium Time
  • 1x Tier VIII Premium Pan Asian Cruiser Irian + 10pt Commander and Port Slot

So with my winnings, I went from 51,830 doubloons up to 58,330 after purchasing this bundle.  More importantly, I had won Irian out of the first container.  This means that buying the third Lunar Year Bundle would actually earn me back doubloons the same way having the permanent camo did.

Start3-1024x798.jpg
This one was a gimme, but I was curious to see what the ACTUAL doubloon equivalency was for the ship.

Lunar Year Bundle #3

I pulled the trigger, bringing me down to 49,442 and I was immediately given 11,500 doubloons for already having Irian.  The three boxes contained the following:

  • 1x Temporary Camouflage "Spring Sky" x3
  • 1x 20,000 Free Experience
  • 1x 750 doubloons

This brings my final doubloon total to 61,692.

Concludy-Bits

Buying Irian effectively cost me 7,164 doubloons, the equivalent of $32.55 USD.  This is a trap to think of it in these terms, though.  I spent 8,888 doubloons three times.  If you buy this optimally with one 25,000 doubloon purchase and a second 1,664 doubloon purchase, this will set you back $108.88 USD (versus $39.51 three times for 8,888 doubloon lots, saving you about $10).  There's certainly a lot of goodies in Wargaming's loot boxes -- they haven't gone the route of Electronic Arts, Bethesda or Activision-Blizzard, so the value is there if you need everything inside.

I stress the "if".  Here's my final tally form purchasing all three bundles, including the loot box contents.

  • 2x Temporary Camouflage "Mosaic" x3
  • 3x Temporary Camouflage "Spring Sky" x3
  • 3x Temporary Camouflage "Type 59" x6
  • 6x Temporary Camouflage Lunar Warrior x12
  • 2x 20,000 Free Experience
  • 4x 750 doubloons
  • 2x Eight Days Premium Time
  • 1x Lunar New Year - Loyang Permanent Camouflage
  • 1x Lunar New Year - Huanghe Permanent Camouflage
  • 1x Lunar New Year - Anshan Permanent Camouflage
  • 2x Lunar New Year - Irian Permanent Camouflage
  • 1x 10pt Pan Asian Commander
  • 1x Special Commander Quáng Róng with 10 Skill Points
  • 1x Irian Commemorative Flag
  • 1x Tier VIII Premium Pan Asian Cruiser Irian
  • 2x Port Slots

Was it worth it for me?  Yes.  But I remind you:  it effectively cost me nothing.  I'm going to get to work finishing up my Irian review now.  It's time to put her new AA systems through the paces.

Needs more data points. If anyone wants to throw dubs at me so I can do the same experiment, I'm not gonna stop you.

Can you post a screenshot of Irian with her standard camo and the Lunar New Year one from the second box?

For me the price was 4900 dubs so I got lucky.

Got the camo's in round one, so when I bought round two I got back 5k dubs, got Iran in round 2 so got back 11.5 k dubs in round 3.

Very good deal for me.

The real key is if you get the Irian camo or the Irian in round 1 for sure go for round 2. If you get the Irian in round 1 or 2 for sure go for round 3.

Well, I've got about 69k in doubloons sitting there gathering dust. I can give it a shot and see what I get (or don't get).

I think I might buy a premium ship instead with my 11k doubloons. Kidd seems pretty relevant right now and Massachusetts seems pretty fun too

I will pull the trigger when I get home. I can provide data if you would like

I have 65k dubs still, no need to buy any. Haven't bought dubs since 2017 santa crate haul

I bought the first one (and only one).  I was on the extremely unlucky side I guess as I only got a bunch of the temporary type59 and Lunar Warrior camos, one crate for Premium time and one with doubloons.  Definitely not doing it again.

Guess I would have been happy if any of the permanent camos dropped, but nada

Guess no doubloons were hurt in Mouse’s testing.... All come down to how lucky you are in terms of pulling Irian before the third set and the perm cam - if not another 16k doubloons out of pocket....

The trend is most definitely people landing the camo in package #1 & the ship in package #2.

This leads me to believe this entire thing was just to get people to buy a lot of doubloons and it was rigged that way. You were never going to actually pay over 26,000 doubloons for a ship. WG wanted to lure you into buying a lot of doubloons to have on your account and then use them for other things like free xp convert or premiums out of the tech tree. So, WG makes far more money than just releasing the ship for cash by itself. I don't mind buying lots of doubloons because I am always converting free xp and getting the T10 perma camos for new ships. It ended up working out pretty sweet for me.

I "had to" get all three bundles to get the Irian too, just because. lol. It netted me: 2250 doubloons, 56 premium days, 9 Mosaic, 3 Asian Lantern, 15 Spring Sky, 60 Lunar Warrior, 6 Type 59, Anshan/Loyang/Irian lunar camos and the Irian. 26664 doubloons spent, 36810 gotten as value goes so 10146 "saved". Not the most epic of boxes and rolls but fair enough, feel I got my doubloons worth. :Smile_Default:

I spent my last 8,888 doubloons on the first bundle, and got the Anshan camo, 16 days premium account, 20,000 free XP, and a bunch of temporary camos that I don't really have any interest in. I was hoping that, owing to the fact that I own all of the other PA premiums, that opening even one of them would have helped to offset the doubloon cost of the bundle but...nope. Nothing. No Irian for me. :Smile_unsure:

[raises hand] Teacher Mouse, is the only way to get the new Lunar permanent camos for the Anshan, Huanghe and LoYang from these containers?

Cause I have these three Pan Asia Ships and all I want are their fancy new camos.

I'm kinda new to the game and did O.K. Purchased all three bundles (got Irian in Bundle 2)

18,000 Dubloons (750 Dubs x2, 1 duplicate Camo for 5K and 11.5 for the bote)

Also got Anshan, Loyang (had Huanghe already) and permanent camo for all 3

Irian + Special commander. Note: I haven't done much with PA line yet, so the other 10 pt commanders help me too.

10 various camo packs

64 days of premium

All for an end cost of 8,664 Dubloons

Edit: Also 400 steel for snowflakes

For now, yes.  However, Wargaming will no doubt be making the Lunar New Year 2019 crates available through other means shortly.

I got Irian in the first box along with the perm camos for my prems.

So second got me 5000 doubs as well as 3x750 doub prizes.

Third got me 11,500 doubs as well as 1x750 doub prize.

So a little over 7000 doubs for a prem ship and a lot of camos.  All up a reasonable price for a prem ship I actually wanted and as a bonus I sold the Kaga which financed the whole thing.

Caveat: I did already have the other Pan-Asian ships though so that may have affected the drop for the Irian

RNG always give me a middle finger..on these crates
