As a British person I can say that this is accurate. We have developed a knack for insulting people in an understated manner.

There are two forms of English: English and misspelt English.

I would consider the first three insults and the fourth just being polite.

Anytime someone says with the greatest respect/no respect intended, they think you are an idiot.

Unless you have known them for years.  Then they are trying to stop you from doing something idiotic.

Ah so us colonials with the more accurate English have to teach them.

Bloody hell sounds like to much work. They'll figure it out eventually... Probably after they stop confusing trunks with boots.

You can't have a discussion of English without some proper banter.

If we only had an Aussie, a Kiwi and a Canuck in thread. Although Quebec French and Traditional French makes for some good banter as well.

No. American English is a butchery of the language.

Typical rebel scum, thinking the USA is the centre of the universe, and ignoring your northern neighbour who spells English correctly.

Pffft!

Any country who is still part of the commonwealth is no neighbor* of mine. Filthy imperials.

As someone who grew up between Belfast and Philadelphia cause of Irish Grandmother -

Defence, Theatre, Grey, Armour, Colour, Apologise, Travelling

Maneuver, Fiber, Liter, Fueled, Traveled.

Otherwise known as "reasons I lost points in English class" cause most of my books as a kid came from Ireland. Or "Your all a bunch of damn fools arguing over it" cause the two of ya have some stupid spellings and in cases, pronunciations, for words.

Clearly we should all go back to Latin, a real language. :Smile-_tongue:

You could get three people from England and have the same garbled conversation.

Or someone from Louisiana, Maine, and Brooklyn.

Well the Brits are quite adept at playing coy, something that us ex colonials are not. We have a tendency to just say what is on our mind and not beat around the bush. Life is too short to spend time figuring out what someone is trying to say, even if they are "being polite". Personally it seems a bit hypocritical to say something you don't mean, but that could just be me. I always thought that language was meant to be a way for people to communicate what they actually mean.... Silly me.

To the Brits all I can say is "Bless your heart."

In America, things are more straightforward and to the point. We don't really engage in linguistic jumping jacks, possible because we have a 1st Amendment created so we don't have to worry about or watch what we say.

Image result for hows that empire doing

I think there is also one dimension missing about this thread is the WAY it is said...some tonal way to say something can differ from the way it is written literally.    Call it inflection or what have you but emphasis on certain parts of the statement as well as volume can alter ones meaning in my book.
