Tips for the USS Dallas

Hey everyone,

I just started playing this game and I've fallen in love with the American cruisers. However, while the Phoenix and the Omaha have treated me well, I've been struggling with dealing effective damage as the Dallas. I really enjoy the dpm this ship can pump out, but the range of 14.3km is a bit too short against tier 8 ships. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

YandereKermit

well, for starters its an IFHE ship, which means it really starts to perform well with a 14 point captain.

it also needs to hug islands like you cant imagine. I am going to post a link on one of my favorite players... its not the Dallas, but good for all US cruiser play... watch how he uses his ship.... it should help you a ton.

he plays a ton of high tier US cruisers... but it translates to the Dallas and up the line. Good luck!

Standard CL rules apply here. Use the ship's concealment. I sail in to about 11-12km, then open fire while kiting away. The only time I fire on the approach is if I am moving behind an island and the enemy won't be able to get a shot in time or if I am sure I am only dealing with one or two ships who are going to target me. If too many enemies are targeting you stop firing immediately and break contact. Start firing again when you are in an advantageous range and the enemy isn't still looking for you. Kite away if you can. Then rinse and repeat. That being said I don't really like that ship. Turrets feel very slow for a CL. I prefer Pensacola. Her turrets are glacial but at least she hits very hard.

Was a fan of Pensy even at tier 7.

I like Dallas for no more complex reason than her looks.

Her profile and turret arrangements, (primary and secondary) are just visually appealing to me, and seem like a nice transition between the Treaty Cruisers and the more modern types.

As an CL with USN 152mm, you want to focuse on destroyers and light warships as your main targets. You harass heavy cruisers and battleships. You have both Hydro and Defensive fire, so Dallas is the start of the USN branch when the cruisers can escort other ships.

As above poster said, you really need to have IFHE for US light cruisers to be effective. Take it as your first 10 point skill. Basically all non-British cruisers at T8+ are covered in 25mm armor everywhere except the superstructure. US CL standard HE cannot pen 25mm, so your shells will just shatter. It's even worse against BBs; you can't even damage T6 battleships.

If you're in a T8 match, which you will be a lot, this basically leaves you reliant on shooting DDs, and setting fires, which is heavily RNG based, and often put out quickly.

Bottom line, get your captain to 10 points asap to get IFHE.  Otherwise your damage will be consistently low, hampering your team's chances at a win, and making the grind to the most-excellent Helena that much longer.

Welcome to WoWS, a lot has already been said, so I’lol just say this, when you are that uptiered don’t be the tip of the spear, rather play more of a support role, wait a little until the engagement starts (or find a nice island to hug) before opening fire, you definitely do not want to be the first target the enemy sees.

Thanks for the reply, turns out my captain only has 6 points :Smile-_tongue:

The skills I am currently taking are Priority Target, Adrenaline Rush and Demolition Expert, not sure if they're the optimal skills but oh well. 14 points captain sounds like such a long grind for me haha.

I will definitely keep that in mind (even though I still have no idea how HE penetrations work). :Smile_Default:

From what I've been seeing, IFHE is insane with 152mm guns! Thanks a lot!

Maybe it seems obvious, but just to ask:  IFHE would be picked prior to or preferred over Concealment Expert?

On USNCL: IFHE > CE > AFT

The main reason is that you should start learning to abuse islands and LoS mechanics, so CE isn't necessary for that.

Meanwhile, IFHE is mandatory on CLs.

I thought the Dallas was pretty brutal honestly. She really only becomes decent with IFHE, and you want to really start learning to use island cover to help yourself going forward with the USN line.
