Just stumpled over this beautiful ship

USCGC Eagle.

For those who don't want to go through the full wikipedia article, the Readers Digest version

- build 1936 as Segelschulschiff (SSS) Horst Wessel

- she was used as a trainig ship for sea cadets

- after the Second World War she was given to the USN

- her sister ship SSS Gorch Fock went to the USSR, was also used as the training ship Tovarishch till 1993 (from 1991 to 1993 under Ukrain flag). She returned 1999 to Germany and is a museum ship in Stralsund.

- she was recommissioned 1946 as USCGC Eagle by the Coast Guard and is still in service to train future USCG officers

A German gunboat from WWI still operates on Lake Tanganyika, albeit as a mixed traffic boat. Nowadays she's known as the MV Liemba, but in her past life she was the Graf von Goetzen, the inspiration for the German ship in The African Queen.

Saw her many times when I used to live in New London. I believe there is a small bit of her main topmast they have to take down every time she goes under the Gold Star Bridge.

I toured Eagle many years ago in Charleston, SC during their Tall Ship event. She is a grand vessel. That day I also toured HMS Rose a replica construction of the late 18th early 19th RN frigate. That was an amazing trip back in time.

Above is a picture of a Naval Parade, in which Horst Wessel participated. You can see her alongside Nürnberg, Leipzig, two K-class Cruisers and the three Panzerschiffe of the Deutschland-class.
