Not really, you want ships to be around the same area of the map, but not necessarily that close to each other. But satying that clsoe you are jsut making easier for the enemy team to angle/bow on or to a enemy DD score multiple torp hits. Its best to spread our ships into a wider area, creating crossfires and allowing better manouvering for your own team.

Will that change with the rework do you think?

I know people like to talk about the need to "group up for AA", but in my experience, you don't want unknown players any closer to you than 5km, because if you have to maneuver, it never fails that your "escort" ends up in your way, or you in his.

Stop abusing it please.

Random battle player behaviour has been absolutely atrocious these past 24 hours.

a) random battle warships acting in a botlike or scripted manner (probably not bots, just really really bad gameplay)

b) yolos "I just want to have fun" that not only contribute nothing, they are, by loss of points, detrimental to battle outcomes

c) clustering (super strength glue) of 4 or more warships within a 5 km radius "because we have to stick together"

Please, whoever you are, stop sniffing it. It is bad for your health.

Reminder : random battles designed to pit players versus other players (that is to say, human vs human) and pit one human team against other human teams. Fun in this context is supposed to be a result of teamwork, or to rephrase that, of humans cooperating to help their own team win.

Now, I have said my piece, I'll just head outside and scream.

If this carries on I'll return to playing 30+ Graf Zeppelin battles a day. And I will show no mercy, I'll even run the most hated 203AP with an anchoring fishing div. Be warned!

LOL. If they are clusterphucked how you gonna bomb them if you play CV lmbo

Always been the case. Take any Avalon Hill boardgame for a given timeframe, and compare its sales to Monopoly. And that's a LONG time before videogames were ever envisioned.

Did you ever play any Avalon Hill games? My favorite from back in the day was Panzer Blitz.....so many fond memories. Probably why the Jagdpanther is my favorite AFV of the war.

I dont know, i dont know how effective the AA will be with the rework.

Right now, staying close just work if you have ships with good AA, overlaping good AA makes a no flyzone. But if you have ships with bad AA, stying close wont help anything, CVs can still easily strike you.

This. Makes hard to manouver and makes easier to the enemy deal with your team. All shells are coming from the same place, no crossfire.

Yeah, my uncle got me into them, and lent me most of them, (I remember he was going to buy Jutland, and devote a room in the basement to it, and paint everything like a North Atlantic seascape, my aunt put the kibosh on that lol) I was too young to have much money, and the games weren't cheap.

I remember playing  Squad Leader, MBT, War and Peace,  Air Force, B-17: Queen of the Skies, Battle of the Bulge, (bought that for 50 cents at a garage sale lol) Firepower, and a Football one my buddy got for Christmas one year.

Didn't have many buddies that had the patience to learn the games, so didn't get to play too often. (although I did manage to keep 3 of us interested enough to finish a Grand Campaign in War and Peace)

Best I was able to do on a regular basis was convert most of my buddies from Risk to Shogun, Fortress America, and Axis & Allies. We'd get together on a Sunday with a bag of herbal remedy and kill an afternoon.

I remember one night, when we all came back to my place after the bar, I got into a drunken argument about who was better at A&A. We ended up making a $50 bet, and starting a game at 3 AM that took me 19 hours to win lol.

I remember Fortress Europa.....I always played the Germans and I had a very unconventional strategy for countering the allied invasion. I would immediately retreat, not giving battle and retreating as fast as my units would allow. I would pull back all the way to the Seigfriend line, shorten my supply lines and shorten the front. I would counter attack when the allies closed in and attempt to break out and encircle large portions of the Allies forces.

Last night I played a Ranked Sprint game with four BB's and one destroyer on each side; we had a T61 and they had an Anshan. I basically said "Let's find and kill their DD early; I have high-explosive loaded." I went and parked outside of C behind a low island I could shoot over, guns pointed in, together with another BB. Our DD is headed in the same basic direction. If theirs isn't in C, we'll be able to push in and roll up from one end to the other. That was my thinking.

The cap starts to flip. He's in C. Our DD, equipped with hydro IIRC, doesn't try to sniff him out or even show him up, but half-heartedly flips torps into B and C and then turns about from C and runs from it as fast as they can.

(I stayed behind the island for far too long, because I was worried about being surprise-torped as I came out.)

Yep, random is pure [edited]. Even scenario battles are bad. I think most players try to get their snowflakes done and take every ship out in the hope they get carried by the rest of the team.

Had a two brothers battle earlier where our BB's sit at the spawn and did nothing while the enemy took the caps to the left and right. Only two tried a rush through the middle when the battle was lost. And yes, they got killed by the enemy even before they reached their cap. There was even one that stayed two the end and had less XP then a cruiser that was one shotted near the start of the match.

Oh yes, we played all of those games and a few more.  To this day, we talk about A&A; and, many of my generation whom played regularly, retired at O-7 and up....  We also were deeply invested in SIMNET at Knox, Hood or Graf....  Bet you never played that.....  Heck, even the COFT's were a lot of fun!

Or the biggest game of them all.....the NTC.  Bet you never played that either.  See, you missed a critical few lad....  Or, like my clan mates RIMPAC's for decades....  (I've never done that.....sigh).....

Did you win the 19 hour marathon and which side did you play

Did you ever play double Risk boards and change the names on the second board?

Of course, we as kids, used to actually shoot at each other with BB guns in the woods and conducted war games for real!!!!  Till finally a friend took a BB in the webbing between the thumb and fore finger and we had to use a degausing magnet to drag the bb out of the hole; and, one of the "mother squad" found out and the wars ended rather dramatically.....  I think we were grounded for a month.......so, we took that time to create surface to air guided "rockets" where we merged model airplane controls with Estes rockets !!!!  Our own SA-1's !!!  Complete with tracers so we could guide the rockets to weather balloons we had up hundreds of feet !!!   Woo-hoo !!!

I elected to go to co-op for this. Super-high win rate, and even if I make a financial loss on a higher tier ship I figure it's worth the coal/steel I get out of it.

I think the biggest issue you have, is that you were spoiled lol. After I turned 16, I was pretty much the only one of our group that wanted to play a complex wargame.

As a 10-16 year old, I'd have given assorted body parts to play that milsim stuff.

I used to try to invent games, using my library of reference books and QJMA mechanics, but never finished one, as I knew that I'd never have anyone to play it with.

I did win, played Axis. First turn, I built industry in North Africa and Indochina, and concentrated on knocking out Russia, and making sure that Japan got a decent share of the extra IPCs. After that, Japan had enough IPCs to keep the US in check in the Pacific, while I built up German forces to invade UK. My opponent was crafty though, and made a lot of incursions that forced me to use my hoarded forces to counter, which slowed me down a lot.

Plus, due to the condition we were in when we started, (and attempted to remain lol) we both made our share of mistakes that helped drag things out.

No, never tried that.

Lol yup, we did that a lot. I could never decide between the high ROF of the lever-action Daisy BB gun, or the superior stopping power of the break-barrel pellet rifle. :Smile_veryhappy:

I know where all my allowances and odd job money, plus whatever I could beg from Mother or collect in discarded bottles, would have went, had paintball been a thing in the 70's and early 80's.....

Yeah, pretty cool until a friend of mine got off script and shot at an OV-10 on approach to the local Airport........we lived near a NAS.     The 4 foot long SA-1, with 8, staggered D-14-5's, went right in front of the cockpit (about 50 yards) and the pilot saw the tracer and had a PTSD moment, since he just got back from Viet Nam (68 I think) ...........well, there was only one group of us in the area, so there was no plausible deniability and my Mom worked for the Police.............  We had an opportunity to meet the pilot (and he was offered the opportunity to spank the crap out of us.....) but chose to have us show him how we created the controls; considering the batteries of that era were big and heavy.........that is unless your neighbor's Dad worked for Bell Labs and we had a few of the high tech new, light weight batteries......................ooops!

I joined at 17 (and my birthday was the #1 date picked in the draft lottery that year !!!) and never looked back..........  You'd come out of SIMNET soaked.....and then, have to sit through an AAR to hear all about, and watch what a NOOB you were because you............Oy Vey, those hurt.....even when you "sort of won".........

Winning isn't fun?

Playing well isn't fun?

Getting deleted in less than 5 minutes is fun?

I'm confused.
